multiple quotas for same IP?

Post by schneidler »

Short version: I want to know if I can have multiple quotas for the same IP address range. Or if we can have custom date ranges on the b/w distribution page.

Long version: I have been running gargoyle on a tp-link router for about a year now, on a small network in 2 residential buildings. There are about 30-40 devices on the network, each with a static IP and I'm using MAC address control. I am not a networking pro at all, just a regular guy helping my family and neighbors save some $$ by doing it this way.

My situation is that there are 5 different residences all sharing 40 gigs of internet per month (8 gigs per residence), renewing on the 15th of each month. Before gargoyle we had a devil of a time with people overusing bandwidth and figuring out how to pay for overage charges. I've been using the "quota" system as a usage tracking tool so that I know how much each person used so that in the event that we go over our allowed 40 gigs, the extra fees get allotted proportionately based on how much each residence went over their allotted 8 gigs. It's kind of a clumsy setup, but it works. I set up IP ranges for each residence (100-110, 110-120, etc), then I set up each IP range with a quote of 16 gigs and told each person that they need to try to go to 50% or less or they might have to pay.

One problem we still have is that some of the devices will do large amounts of downloading and the users swear they had nothing to do with it. Sometimes the people in question weren't even home at that time, but their device was. This is mostly on iOS devices, including my wife's fancy iphone. It's probably doing software updates, and sometimes these are like 1, 2, and 3 gigs at a time. This is happening on 3 or 4 different devices at random times. I want to stop it from happening and thought of putting in a quota per IP of like 200 or 300 mb per day so that even if it starts a software update, it can't eat up 1/3 of the monthly bandwidth in one night. But I can't because it already has an existing monthly quota and won't let me add a daily quota on top of that.

The monthly quota exists primarily as a data usage tracking tool. I know that I could be checking usage from the B / W Distribution page, but the distribution time frame can only be set to hours, days, months, and not what I need, from the 15th to the 14th. And I need to check usage for a range of IPs, not for each IP one at a time. Some of these residences have like 15 devices. The ISP is unwilling to change my date from the 15th to the 1st, which would fix everything.

I see 2 possible solutions - either custom date ranges on the B/W Distribution page (allowing me to delete the monthly quotas), or multiple quotas. Can I make a MONTHLY quota for IPs 100-125 of 8 gigs, and at the same time also have a DAILY quota for IP 112 of 200 mb per day? I'm sorry this is so long and complicated I don't know how to ask in a shorter way. Thanks for any help.
