Archer C7 V2 low throughput

Post by hansallis »

First off I'd like to say I'm grateful for this type of project. The features are just what I was looking for.

After trying both 1.8.1 and 1.9.0 I found that the throughput I'm achieving both over wired and wireless connections is very low. We have a 30/30 Mbps connection which in practice achieves 29/25 Mbps when we hook up a laptop instead of the router. When using the router, we don't get anything above 12/5 Mbps.

I'm a bit stuck here since I can't grasp what's causing the issues. This is a list of what I've found/tried:
- for testing with the laptop I utilized the same cable as the router, so I'm assuming the cable is not to blame;
- CPU usage on the router is below 20% during a speed test;
- QoS is disabled;
- no other special settings, just a single UDP port forward;
- didn't test with the stock firmware (yet).

Any suggestions as to what I could try next? Is a hardware problem a likely cause for this? I'm a bit low on things to try from here.

Ok, that actually improved the speed a bit to around 16/12 Mbps. Still not great, but a definite improvement. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences with the C7.

Just did some tests during iperf which I couldn't really explain. As it turns out, the router negotiated a gigabit link over the cable to the CPE, while the laptop we tested with decided that 100Mbit/sec was better.

Apparently the cable we used works fine on 100Mbit/sec but causes a bad connection at gigabit speeds.

Case closed I guess :) Still looking for the proper way to fix the interface at 100Mbit/sec, but I'll probably manage.
