Encryption
Hello. Just flashed Wndr4300v1 w 1.8.1. Going to use it as simple ap at first. In basic I'm setting networks to match main router on both 5 and 2.4. Under wireless in basic setup. I see only one box for encryption? Am I missing something? Would like to have separate PW for both wireless networks. Help?
Re: Encryption
Most 802.11n products will knock your throughput down by up to 80% if you use WEP or WPA/TKIP security. The reason is that the 802.11n spec states that the high throughput rates (link rates above 54 Mbps) can't be enabled if either of those outdated security methods are used.
The only exceptions are some products that are not Wi-Fi certified for 802.11n. The Wi-Fi Certification test suite checks for proper operation with WEP, WPA and WPA2. But if manufacturers don't submit their products for Certification, they may not lock out the higher rates. We also found early products using Ralink silicon also improperly enabled the higher rates when WEP and WPA/TKIP were used. But Ralink-based products that are Wi-Fi Certified now properly lock out the higher rages.
The bottom line is that you can only use WPA2/AES wireless security (or no security at all) if you don't want to throw away lots of speed.

We should have dif dropdown boxes for 5 ghz and 2.4 but WPA2 PSK is the rite one to pick for best speed.

Re: Encryption
Not sure if you understood me. What I am saying is there is no box for password on 5ghz. Just one box is available. I am either missing it(my fault) or its a bug or its intentional? So i Have to use same password for both wifi networks? IDK...But thanks for answering me. If you know there is supposed to be one. Please let me know...Thanks much
Re: Encryption
You are rite but i don't no why there is just one password box. sorry

There is only supposed to be one.
Only one opportunity for someone to guess your network password.
You can set them separately manually in /etc/config/wireless

Re: Encryption
That's what I needed to know. Thanks. I have a couple friends I don't mind sharing the 5ghz with when they come over. I actually want to share files with them. So I like the idea of separate for both.
Doesn't matter. At least I can set up a guest acct on 2.4 only. That way the gaming gang can party. While guests can still surf. Either way. After playing around in GUI. I will be changing this in to the main router. So I can take advantage of all of QoS and bandwith monitoring. Just had to see it first.I'm happy these routers have support. Good deal.

Re: Encryption*Edit
Well, apparently I spoke to soon. Set up guest network to match router and other ap. Tried to use selection of 2.4 only. Set it on a different channel. I stand right next to the gar ap to make sure I'm getting IP through it. It just sits at obtaining IP forever. Never gets one. So I tried setting guest to both 2.4 and 5. Same thing happens. I've rebooted everything to see if that would help. No go. Can not get an IP through this gargolye ap. I can from main router and from a ddwrt ap behind the gar. I'm stumped. As for the PW. Its also only one for both 2.4 and 5. Which I don't care for. I do not want guests using my 5 network. Yes I can change name. But sooner or later. Someone will figure it out. Lol. Any suggestions on this? As I said yesterday. I want to change out the garg to router. So, I guess I could do that and hope that guest works in router mode....mean to say. Not ap. Wan is on. Anybody?

To clarify: You have a wired connectionspckarma112 wrote:Set up guest network to match router and other ap. Tried to use selection of 2.4 only. Set it on a different channel. WAN Main router LAN ---- LAN Gargoyle AP LAN ----- LAN DDWRT
And only main router is running dhcp? And Gargoyle AP not provide IP?
Certainly Gargoyle will work as Internet gateway with dhcp. But surely it is easy for you to test:pckarma112 wrote:I want to change out the garg to router. So, I guess I could do that and hope that guest works in router mode

Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?

Re: Encryption
Yes all wired to each other. Netgear wndr4300 dhcp handing out IP to wired lan Gar AP to DDWRT wired lan AP. Can get IP from main netgear and ddwrt. What is even more strange is I can get an IP from the gar ap if I try wlan. Only guest can not get one.? I think I will just switch gar to main router tomorrow and see what happens. I know I can run guest network from ddwrt ap. Not as much control with ddwrt. But I can live with it. Sorry to have taken anyone's time. I was hoping maybe I just missed something. Its a head scratcher. But I do love every thing else with this firmware. Much much thanks to the people who contribute. Fantastic job.
