IP specific DNS

Post by landersohn »

First of all, I love your firmware, especially the quotas for a set of IP addresses, This is the only router firmware I found that does what you do, Congrats!

Here's my idea: I want my kid's devices to be somewhat protected but don't want this protection to apply to my PCs and tablets.
So it would be really cool if I could specify a set of LAN IP addresses which will be forced to go through a specific DNS, e.g. OpenDNS which enables web content filtering whereas other LAN IP addresses can use a different DNS w/o Web content filtering.

+1

You need to purchase more than one router and you can do this.

I understand the concept with two routers, I think. I'd hook up the second router to the first one and it would be on a different subnet, say 192.168.2.1.
Now I have the problem, though, that devices on the 2nd subnet have problems printing to wireless printers which are on the first subnet? At least that was my experience at some point. Maybe I did something wrong.

have a look at this post

I have never done it but I suspect you can manually change the routing?

As long as you are happy to manually set the dns settings on those machines you don't want to go via opendns you can do this easily on one router and one subnet (I do it).

Here's an explanation in this thread http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/vi ... g66#p19162

Rog 66:
I'd happily manually configure DNS on devices, problem is that on most tablets and smart phones this is not possible unless the devices are rooted, which mine are not.

I'll look at the posts.
Thanks for all the help!
