Newbie questions

Post by JohnRea »

Hi

I want to join the world of Gargoyle users and am unsure whether I should try to flash my existing router - a Billion Bipac 7800N, or go ahead and take the "easy" route and buy one from the site.

1) To flash my existing router, I'm unsure a) if it's supported and if so, b) which image I should choose?

2) If I buy one - which I'm likely to do anyway in case I brick my Bipac when messing with it - do they come with a power cable for Australia or would I need to buy an adaptor as well?

Thanks in anticipation...John

Your existing hardware is a router/modem combo not supported by any open source software.

My advice to you is to buy a supported router locally so you get what you need power supply wise. You will still need the 7800N for the modem part and will put it in 'bridge' mode which will disable all its router functions turning it into a plain modem only.

You can buy any router listed as supported here http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start

Just make sure under the 'status' column that it has either 8.09, 10.03 or 12.09 listed. It should also have at least 8MB of flash and 32MB of RAM to run Gargoyle.
