Wireless Bridge / Repeater Mode DNS

Post by DoesItMatter »

Eric - Not sure if this is a bug or by design...

Repeatable on my side.

Set Wireless Bridge mode

If you set the AP / Gateway IP to be the same as the Bridge IP,
Gargoyle does not update time correctly but internet browsing
works just fine, no issues.

If you set the AP / Gateway IP - again all internet browsing works,
but now the time updates correctly in Gargoyle interface.

Is this some kind of routing bug? Or by design?

Build I'm running on my D-Link DIR-601 rev A1
1.5.X (Built 20120929-0818 git@9a52bea)
 Soylent Green Is People!
2x Asus RT-N16 = Asus 3.0.0.4.374.43 Merlin
2x Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH V1 A0D0 = Gargoyle 1.9.x / LEDE 17.01.x
2x Engenius - ESR900 Stock 1.4.0 / OpenWRT Trunk 49400

What is the advantage of setting the AP IP and the bridge IP the same? Does it make sense? Doesn't it mean you have two devices with the same IP address on your network?

I guess I assume that these would always be different. Does it work if they are different?

I have been experimenting with WDS this weekend myself. Have you every used that?
Linksys WRT1900ACv2
Netgear WNDR3700v2
TP Link 1043ND v3
TP-Link TL-WDR3600 v1
Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2
WRT54G-TM

In bridge mode the device is very explicitly not functioning as a gateway -- that's why you have both bridge mode and gateway mode. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to have the gateway IP the same as the IP of the device you are configuring as a bridge.

OK that makes sense.

I'm wondering if that is the issue when some people are having
DNS issues in their various configs.
