no internet, TL-WR1043ND + Dlink G604T

Post by Gaskell »

Just got a TL-WR1043ND today and put the latest version of gargoyle on it.
Easy as to put gargoyle on it. Configured it to assign ip's via mac address and that works sweet as. No internet access at all though and I'm not sure what to do. The documentation is pretty limited and I'm not 100% sure what I've done wrong.
I can connect to both the dlink and the tp-link but no web sites will load.
What info do you guys need to help me out?
I have to set my ip manually and plug into the dlink to get internet so I can post here. Then change the cable back and set the ip to auto to connect to the tp-link again.
TBH it could be a setting in the dlink that i changed when i got it years ago but I'm not sure.

The Dlink G604T is a modem with a router built in. Did you bridge it before you hooked up the TL-WR1043ND? What wan ip address does the TL-1043ND report it has when plugged into the Dlink G604T?

No I didn't. Bridging is not something I am familiar with.

Here is double nat explained:

http://support.iprimus.com.au/index.php ... &task=view

What wan ip address does the TL-1043ND report it has when plugged into the Dlink G604T? The fact that you can't surf the web at all makes me think that maybe the wan side has the same subnet as the lan side. Try to assign the TL-1043ND another subnet, like 192.168.2.1 if the wan ip address is in the 192.168.1.x range. This will at least get you online, but you will still be doing double nat and have other problems.

Just to save me going back and forward changing things, I'm now on here with my cell.
i'm guessing where it says internet/wan. I've got the drop down box set to dhcp wired. under that it's blank. Where it says "current ip" and "current lease expires" theres nothing.

Changing Settings to try different things. To be able to get both routers up I need to set the tp link to static ip wired:
Ip 10.1.1.10
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 10.1.1.1

Dhcp is off on the dlink. Maybe thats an issue. Altho from what you linked, that sounds like even if I get it to connect I will have issues with games.

* I turned dhcp on and I have internet access. Is that double nat thing going to cause issues? I think if I change the dlink to bridging then the tp-link authenicates and connects to the isp, is that right? Then enter the info into the tp-link (isp username and password)?

Bridge mode is recommended for all DSL links. It will give higher performance, more stability and greater functionality.

Your modem supports bridge mode through the quick set up. See http://support.loxinfo.co.th/adsl/pdf/dlink604.pdf and use H4 as shown on page 10.

As mix recommended you should set up your Gargoyle router on a difference subnet than the modem. So since you are accessing your modem and 192.168.1.1 you should setup Gargoyle to manage subnet 192.168.2.x. Then on Basic->Connection screen make your type "PPPoE" and enter your credentials there.

If you continue to have trouble post your Status->Overview screen after given Gargoyle a few moments to establish the PPPoE connection.

Access to your modem from the LAN is possible by following this guide.

The connection is PPPoA VC-Mux not PPPoE.
Wouldn't trying to connect with PPPoE fail?

it seems the pic was too big heres the link

New info, PPPoA, which changes my recommendation.

Gargoyle does not support PPPoA so you cannot use the recommended bridge mode. Your only choice is then to double NAT setting your G604T in the "h3" PPPoA mode.

You can then setup the LAN side of your G064T to service 192.168.1.x and enable DHCP there.

On your Gargoyle Connection->Basic setup your WAN connection as DHCP and under LAN configuration set your 1043D to 192.168.2.1.

If you are still having trouble post your Status->Overview screen.

I feel like such a noob reading all this. Re-reading and re-reading.
I started to feel like maybe I was just wasting peoples time. Had a break for a bit and went back to it again.

Many thanks in helping me with this. It seems when I was messing around with the settings and accidently got it working was because I entered the subnet wrong - which was the right thing to do.
The Dlink is on 255.0.0.0 and the tp-link is on 255.255.255.0. The dlink ip range is still on the default 10.1.1.x range and the tp-link is 192.168.1.x range.

Now i've gone through and set ip's based on mac addresses and set up the quotas (the whole reason I went for this router and gargoyle).

Looks like the only solution for this setup to function optimally is to wait for gargoyle to support PPPoA but I have net access and everything seems to be working. Will have to test it out with a few online games and hope theres no issues having double NAT.
