Huge Decrease in Bandwidth!!!

Post by Mugen »

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking these forums now for a month or so gathering information on my flash.. I own a WNDR3700v2 flashed to the Gargoyle 1.5.4 firmware. The configuration is very basic 2.4ghz is only enabled no QoS has been enabled yet.

Memory Usage: 14.6MB / 60.5MB (24.2%)
CPU Load Averages: 0.00/0.00/0.00 (1/5/15)

The issue I'm running into is that Internet is only and its best speed when I restart the unit. Even though I restart I don't get maximum download or upload speed though the major concern is that when there is gaming or streaming going on its way smoother then it was on my previous Netgear firmware. I can't seem to get around this though. I have a 10mb d/l connection (fastest they offer in my area) and I have seen speeds of 1.2mb download from (Speakeasy.net). Anyone have any suggestions?

Your claiming this router with Gargoyle firmware installed is slowing your 10 Mbps internet connection to 1.2 Mbps? Or are you confusing megabits and megabytes? Your router, whether is has Gargoyle installed or not should be able to route way more than 10 Mbps. It is one of the most powerful consumer routers you can buy that support OpenWRT and Gargoyle. I'd reset the router to defaults in the web interface and try a reliable speed test again.

You have an excellent platfrom for running Gargoyle. Now I think you may have to come to terms with exaclty what your ISP means when he say 10mbps download.

Typically this means that will be the maximum you will see. The minimum you will see is not stated. Also the minimum you will see can vary throughout the day based on what the other customers are doing,

Tell us a little about the connection (Cable/DSL/Fiber) and the ISP you have and what testing you did with the netgear firmware before you changed to Gargoyle.

You might try connecting your PC directly to your modem and see what speeds you get without any router involved.

It is highly unlikely that your router is responsible for any slowdown in your connection in my view.

A WRT54GL will never route anywhere close to 50 Mbps. This is pretty common knowledge. You need a newer N router with a much faster cpu to route that kind of bandwidth.

Agree with mix. I have my 3700v2 running at 98Mbits with no QoS. If you introduce QoS you get a bit hit but the best I could get on my 1043nd with no QoS was about 55, 70 if you shut down all reporting. Gargoyle is great but all that great reporting takes CPU horsepower. The 1043nd just does not have the grunt, you need a much better CPU, same goes for the 54, a good but old router.

There is a Linux regression in the Athros driver, that causes some devices to kill the 2.4GHz and possibly the 5GHz.

Blackberry Playbook v2.0 and up is one device.

Search for ath: Failed to stop TX DMA!
