UPnP Bandwidth Requirements

Post by ERIC8585 »

Is there any need to change the UPnP bandwidth limits? It is currently set at the default 1024 kbit/sec down 512 kbit/sec up. I use xbox, which I believe uses UPnP over the internet. My internet connection is 50Mbps/15Mbps.

Doubtful.

I never use UPnP but from what I understand, you can also use
it to stream movies to your xbox360/ps3 consoles

If you're only using it for gaming, your settings should be fine.

More bandwidth is definitely needed for video streaming.

UPnP video streaming over WAN? I thought it was only used for local video streaming?

You definitely may want more than 1 Mbps download and .5 Mbps upload for your Xbox and PS3 games.

Does 0 disable the limit?

No idea. Supposedly it's the bitrate that is reported to UPnP clients, contrary to what the web interface says it does. I have no idea if miniupnpd is actually capable of throttling bandwidth or if it simply just tells the client (ie., PS3, Xbox, your Windows computer) that theoretically this is how much bandwidth is available. I guess if you want to be safe, you can set the upload and download to say 20% of your available bandwidth for each. This should be fast enough to play games with the internet connection you have available.
