I have Gargoyle 1.5.1, I set up a studytime rule for the children where in study time I enable it and then they can only access pages I have agreed
I then did some testing and the web aspect works perfectly. However I also noticed that I could still access msn (xfire) and steam was still working which doesn't sound correct from the above rules?
As an appendum to this, I did wonder if it was because the application already had the connection so wasn't having it broken but just tested and I can come out of xfire and back in and it works fine and likewise with steam so that doesn't seem right
Your configuration will only block http requests, not https requests (or any other protocol). There is a fundamental technical limitation with the website blocker, which prevents any https requests from being filtered, unless you want to block ALL https requests. Maybe you are accessing these sites via https? Also, if other programs are accessing data on these sites in a way other than loading web pages, this configuration won't block that either.
Ah... I think your confusion is due to a bit of a labeling issue.
The issue is that "Block All" doesn't quite mean "Block All", it really means something closer to "Block Any". Really it means, "Block all in this category that are matched by another category that has an explicit definition other than "Block All", or absolutely everything if no categories are defined that aren't "Block All".
The problem in designing this interface is balancing the obviousness of what's happening when no categories are specified (so everything does get blocked, and it really is "Block All"), and what happens when a category is specified. I should really re-evaluate the labeling here, but I'm not sure what would be most intuitive. Any suggestions?
Regarding the suggestion, the only think I can think of is if you select say the web component then it changes the others to open and greys them - or alternatively removes them from the selection with a small tooltip explaining it.
So if we take my scenario - which the web component is frankly incredible! Is there a way of doing what I want which is basically have no internet for the children with the exception of certain web pages?
I had a rule to restrict network access for the children at bedtime, but it didn't seem to stop the itouch continuing downloading whatever it was - should this be expected? With all network access does that close all connection but if the connection is already in use it keeps it till it comes out of it?
