functionality
I own a Netgear 37AVv2 router and was looking into a way to improve its functionality but from reading here, it seems like Gargoyle would actually disable some of the options in my router. This router has dual band and after installing Gargoyle, I would only have access to the 2.4 band and the 5ghz band would be gone. If, as I understand it, Gargoyle has for its primary purpose to extend the functionality of your router, it doesn't makes sense to me to install it on my router. I haven't tried it yet, just looking around but my conclusion is that Gargoyle is for old outdated hardware. I'm I wrong or what ?
Re: functionality
Gargoyle improves some functionality and it is what it is.
My chellenge to you is find a better free open-souce firmware.
Considering Gargoyle is made by volunteers I would say that it is exceptional

Re: functionality
Sorry if you've been offended by my questions. That was not at all my intentions. I heard somewhere that you could encrypt all of your data from any hardware going through your internet and that's how I began looking into I think open-wrt and Gargoyle. After reading and reading here on the forums, I still don't know what would be the advantage of installing it on my router. I've seen people installing it on the same router that I have but without any comments on what the improvements or functionalities added. I'm honestly curious, that's all. Thanks for your comments anyway.

You should look up VPNThat was not at all my intentions. I heard somewhere that you could encrypt all of your data from any hardware going through your internet
VPN is point to point so you need an end point. VPN is usually client user (one point) somewhere on the internet to say back to work (second point)
but you could also use a service like http://hidemyass.com/vpn/ for encryed usage of the internet (they become the second point)
Gargoyle does not natively support VPN
DD-WRT does support VPN.................
