Restrict Access to printer

Post by Walton »

Hi all,

I'm using 1.4.1 on a WNDR3700. I currently have a printer on a static address - 192.168.1.2

I know this is a strange one, but am I able to restrict access to it for local hosts within Gargoyle or do I have to go to subnetting.

As background, the printer (and Netgear) will be located 5 hours away. It is a free internet service we offer to guests in a ski club. I want to be able to print to it (via SSH tunnel), but don't want local users (all wifi) to be able to use it.

Tough I know but if everyone was fair and didn't abuse the free internet access we offer, I wouldn't have gotten to know about Gargoyle. I can see the same thing happening with a printer on the network. They will find it and start printing to it.

Thanks in advance, John from Australia.

PS - loving Garoyle while I'm testing this for the club at home. If I didn't have an Asus NT-56U, it would be going on my home router as well.

OK, solved.

Going right through the printer options, I found an option where you can set hosts "who are allowed to make TCP connections" to the printer, ie print or connect to the web interface.

So setting the router address as allowed enables anyone who can SSH into the router to be able to print (providing their printer port is set up accordingly). This is only 2 of us who need to print remotely.

I can also add the one or two others who need to print on-site by giving them a static IP in Gargoyle and putting them in the printer allow list as well.

In the end, it's as easy as that. Very happy with Gargoyle - Thank you
