wbr-2310, wnr100v2, or perhaps a pre-installed wndr3700v2...

Post by tallship »

Hello,

As the topic of the thread might suggest, I have a D-Link wbr-2130, and a Netgear wnr1000v2 j- neither of which show up as a supported device on the ToH at OpenWrt.org

I don't think either of these would be acceptable platforms for Gargoyle, since a quick search didn't reveal much in the way of more than people buying ROM chips to upgrade them, and other hardware hacks that would raise the price well above what is listed in the store here.

I like the idea of of just purchasing an inexpensive wireless router with gargoyle pre-installed, yet the only model in the store (the Accton MR3201A) is an 802.11g device w/a single 10/100 Ethernet port.

Not that I can't put a switch in front of it, but I was hoping to find something along the lines of a device with 4 Ethernet ports, and flash/RAM to endure upgrades and extra space for larger firmware and packages as time goes by.

At OpenWrt.org, I saw that the Netgear wndr3700v2 has 16/64 flash, and RAM, respectively, and Gigabit Ethernet too.

I don't follow the hardware market too closely nowadays, I don't have to anymore because we don't do wYNd0z3 in our house unless it's a guest in VirtualBox, and rarely even then; so I don't really know which mfgrs are considered more reliable and durable than others - except that I hear almost universally that Belkin wireless routers are junk.

Again, I know I could simply use a switch in front of it, but it would be simpler to have some local Ethernet ports and remove the added hops (along with arp cache considerations too) - plus, it apparently supports VLAN configuration.

That, coupled with the basic QOS that Gargoyle offers would be an excellent bundle in a small package.

The other way (prolly the best way) would be to install a pfSense box off the providers access point, plug a switch into that, and hang the $37.00 Accton/Gargoyle router off of the switch, even bridging another one further away in the house where those reception areas are spotty for the non-mission critical workstations, laptops, Androids, etc.

My Asterisk, Freeswitch, and other servers could just hang off of the main switch (Yes, I'm doing all of this with dyndns - another reason I was hoping for a gargoyle router that's a bit higher ended).

Okay, sorry to glaze your eyes over with me thinking out loud about topology, but in a nutshell, do you have other, slightly higher end wireless routers you're offering, or can you recommend a couple of links, resources to stable implementations of such a product?

I actually wouldn't even be writing this right now if my daughter hadn't hammered the fricken' router last night with Ktorrent, and the the basic traffic shaping capabilities of Gargoyle would be sufficient for me since all I really need to do is put SIP and IAX traffic at the top and her crap on the bottom and throttle it.

Thanks, and kindest regards,

Bradley

WZR-HP-G300NH - seems to be one of the more stable ones.

Can get them on sale @ NewEgg quite often.

Easily flash back and forth between these firmwares:

Buffalo/DD-WRT and OpenWRT/Gargoyle

All 4 types of firmwares can be flashed to the WZR-HP-G300NH

Plenty of flash and ram for any usage you might need.

32MB flash, 64MB ram - lots of room to play with

You also have a USB port if you ever want to setup NAS devices.

Oh, and all ports, WAN and LAN are gigabit capable.

2x Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH V1 A0D0 = Gargoyle 1.9.x / LEDE 17.01.x
2x Engenius - ESR900 Stock 1.4.0 / OpenWRT Trunk 49400
