looking for a new AP

Hello

I am looking for a new cheap AP, as my current AP is not working with Gargoyle... http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/vi ... 7812#p7812

The AP should be as cheap as possible. Work with Gargoyle/OpenWRT and should at least be supported for a few years

My router is a TL-WR1043ND, so I guess that it would be the best if it would be another Atheros router/AP.

I'm currently running for main routers:

Asus RT-N16 ( Tomato mod firmware by Toastman )

Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH ( Gargoyle/OpenWRT )

Cisco E3000 ( DD-WRT )

All 3 work quite well but it took a while to figure out which
firmware was best on each router, but they DO work consistently.

Asus - got for about $80 shipped - NewEgg

Buffalo - got for about $75 shipped - NewEgg

Cisco - got for $63 shipped - NewEgg (remanufactured)

I have no special requirements, except:

Ok, it would be nice if it had a minimum of two ethernet ports (no need for gigabit). And as my router supports 300Mbps, it would be nice if the AP would do the same.

I need it to connect my thin client and my blu-ray player to my network.

The Danish prices seem a bit higher
Looking at the Danish market, it seems like the cheapest router, that seems to fulfill what I need is the TP-Link TL-WR940N: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr940n
I guess that Gargoyle should make it an ok low-cost AP.

Probably the easiest would be to post what routers you can
get cheap locally, and have other members comment on them.

Honestly, TP-Link is very flaky from comments I've seen.

I wonder if they are just too new and more work needs to be done
to stabilize their compatibility, or their Q.C. is not the greatest.

If you really want stability - I'd stay away from TP-Link unless
you have a known stable TP-Link router that always works for you.

Then make sure you get the exact same version & hardware rev.

The D-Link DIR-615 rev E should be OK but be advised, my
D-Link DIR601 has a weak antenna - I think a lot of the D-Link routers
have weaker range than normal, but input from other users
may be helpful on that.

The Buffalo WHR-HP-G300N should be good, but you would probably
have to use DD-WRT for that one as I don't see any OpenWRT
work on that = no Gargoyle support either yet.

Linksys E1000 looks like its being worked on by OpenWRT but again,
may be a while for that one to be supported by Gargoyle.

The TP-Link TL-WR940N looks like should be supported by OpenWRT
but others hopefully will give feedback on performance/stability.

No ideas on the Belkin, Longshire, or Netgear routers.
The other Buffalo EU version, again - not sure.

That is also the main reason who I did choose TP-Link for my Router.
TP-Link may not be the one with the best hardware... But the hardware is not changing that often (within the same model number).

My DIR-601 same issue - works great, weak wireless, and LED's are
not all lit - but I don't see the router anyway so I don't care about
the LED's and whether or not they work.

Should still work OK as another AP though.

the TP-Link 1043 models

Since you have the D-Link - try flashing Gargoyle 1.4.1 on there
and see how it performs - if you can replace the antenna,
you might be able to boost some of the signal strength.

If I remember correctly the DIR-615 B2 has only got 2MB flash and has a Ubicom IP5090U CPU and IIRC is it not supported by any open source router OS.
