Need router recommendation for NZ

Post by Dr.R. Clavan »

Hi,

My ISP speeds are (should be) 500/200. Only getting about 100/100 in practice because router running latest Gargoyle is just to slow.

Want to buy new router as Christmas present to myself. Was recommended a GLiNet Flint 2 by Lantis a while ago but that one is not for sale (AFAIK) in New Zealand.

Anyone with 5 minutes to spare, please have a look here https://pricespy.co.nz/category.php?k=s ... &catId=386 and tell me if any of these routers could run Gargoyle and is fast enough to achieve advertised ISP speeds.

Thanks!

I had a quick look. A lot of stuff was not compatible.
The stuff that was is generally mid to low tier (performance wise). I wouldn’t be able to recommend them with a guarantee you’d get your line speed is the problem.

Two suggestions from that site:
- Asus TUF AX4200 (OpenWrt info)
- Cudy M3000 (OpenWrt info)

The Asus TUF-AX4200 has the same SoC as the GL-MT6000 and is currently supported by Lantis' beta builds. Asus TUF-AX6000 and RT-AX59U are also supported if you can find them (not listed on that site though). With all 3 Asus models flashing OpenWrt is best done (currently at least) with a transition initramfs image from a non-OpenWrt source via the Asus web UI; after rebooting a standard OpenWrt (or Gargoyle) sysupgrade image can be flashed via the LuCI UI.

The Cudy has some caveats:
  • same SoC family but less potent variant than the GL-MT6000 or above Asus models (I think 500/200 would be realistic but might be marginal if QoS is required)
  • only has 1 LAN port so would require an external switch to support more than 1 wired device
  • officially OpenWrt only supports v1 (black case with red accent) but v2 (white case with cyan accent) uses the same OEM firmware and runs the v1 OpenWrt build normally; flashing is by way of a transition image available from the Cudy website
  • is not yet supported by Gargoyle but I have successfully tested a build from Lantis' current development branch on both v1 and v2 and hope to shortly put up a PR for that

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately the Asus TUF AX4200 now shows as not in store anywhere and that Cudy doesn't appeal to me. Darn.

Lantis, we are practically neighbours. Anything in Oz that might be worth ordering?

I picked up my GLiNet Flint 2 from Amazon, I’m not sure if that’s an option for you or are you trying to shop locally?
Might be worth searching Amazon for any of the recommended models actually. I did see the Asus TUF AX4200 is available cheap from Germany, would need a new wall plug or adapter.
The flashing process requires serial though or an unconfirmed method from the gui so it might not be super friendly.

I did what you recommended and ordered the GLiNet Flint 2 from Amazon Australia. Should have it by the 18th. Yay.

What image do I download for it though? In the Architecture dropdownbox I only see an MT7622, no MT6000?

Awesome, downloaded and ready to flash when the thing arrives! Any reason why they are only available on your lantisproject domain and not gargoyle-router?
