WRT54GL download speed problem

Post by technocar2 »

Hi,
I recently flashed my wrt54gl with Gargoyle firmware and its been working great but I can't seem to be getting my full download speed. What I mean is when I share between computers on my lan network, I get full 100 mbps speed; but when I download anything from the internet (WAN) I only get about 10-15 mbps and my ISP gives me 30 mbps down and 2 mbps up. I know this is a problem or maybe a settings issue with Gargoyle because I tried both stock firmware and DD-WRT and both give me the full 30 mbps down and 2 mbps up; but Gargoyle only gives me ~10-15 mbps down and 2 mbps up. But everything is fine on the LAN network; its the WAN that slows me down and its not a hardware problem I don't think cause like I said both stock firmware and DD-WRT work fine. I have set everything to default setting after installing Gargoyle, so any ideas of whats going on? I would really like to use Gargoyle because of the Quotas feature since DD-WRT doesn't have that.
Thanks, and sorry for the long post. :)

Gargoyle does take a bit more processing power than the other
firmwares, because of all its features and monitoring.

You REALLY need a faster router to take advantage of Gargoyle.

The WRT54G's are just too old now to be useful for anything other
than basic stuff. If you are a power user - you NEED to upgrade.

I was running a WRT-54G-TM - which I donated to a dev, because
all I used it for was testing, and I found out, through my own tests,
that I could completely overload the router with torrents, and
still NOT use up all my available bandwidth!

The WRT54G's are great routers, but for BASIC usage.

Accept the fact that you will need to upgrade.

These tests were done with the assistance of a developer, this is
not just me stating the fact - the developer realized this as well.

You may want to consider a WZR-HP-G300NH by Buffalo

It has 32MB Flash, 64MB Ram, 400Mhz processor, and USB for an
external drive - use as NAS, etc.

DD-WRT is still not that great on it, but Open-WRT and Gargoyle
run on it quite nicely! Gargoyle has been running nice on it for me.

Alright, will get a WZR-HP-G300NH then, also I see it has Atheros AR9132 so which file will I use to install Gargoyle on it or do I need to install Open-WRT first and then install Gargoyle and Thanks for the response.

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/buffalo/wzr-hp-g300h

I did the steps under:

"Migrate from DD-WRT to OpenWRT" on the wiki page

I had DD-WRT loaded first, then I did those steps

Once I did the mtd command, I waited, then got into the
Gargoyle GUI interface, and then flash-upgraded to the latest
Gargoyle download.

I went DD-WRT -> Gargoyle 1.3.5 -> Gargoyle 1.3.7 via GUI

I was NOT successful trying the TFTP method.
I tried via Windows and Linux - no luck either way.
