OpenDNS Setup

I saw an older thread on this, but I thought it might be better to start a new one.

I'm trying to setup OpenDNS content filtering. I can add it under Connection->Dynamic DNS Services, but when I go to force an update, I'm getting NaN/NaN NaN:NaN:NaN in the Last Update field. I thought I read somewhere that using a nonstandard character as part of the OpenDNS password was causing the problem, but OpenDNS requires a nonstandard character when opening an account (I used an exclamation point in mine).

Any suggestions?

Bonus question: I occasionally need to do online research (ahem) that I don't want filtered by OpenDNS. How do I tell Gargoyle not to filter certain IP addresses through openDNS?

To get the opendns to update - select dnsomatic from the dropdown.

If you have created an opendns account you get a dnsomatic one for free with the same details.

fill in your username and password - same as opendns login, and save.
Then login to dnsomatic and check your ip is changing.


To bypass opendns, just change your dns server on your local device to something like google.

"Dynamic DNS Services" and "DNS"(OpenDNS) are different things.

"Dynamic DNS Services" is for when your IP address changes (say your home) but you want to connect. my.home.com = 10.10.10.10

"DNS" resolves url to IP address. www.google.com = 172.217.25.164

Has been asked for a few times. Can't do it through the GUI

Quick and simple solution is to purchase a second router

Dont tick the "force use routers dns" box and instead block port 53 in the firewall for the ip addresses that you don't want to be able to change their dns config away from opendns .

Open DNS and dynamic DNS are different yes that's correct.

Open DNS provide a service called DNS o matic which uses the same login details as you login to open DNS.

This allows your router to update open DNS with your IP address, allowing a dynamically changing wan ip, to always get the policies applied in the open DNS portal.

That way you can select use open DNS routers and it will filter websites for the category or policies you select.

If my writing is unclear sorry for that it was a direct answer to the exact question I'd had and figured out on my openwrt router a couple of months ago.

I get the same questions at work, as I'm an open DNS partner for our MSP
