Different Internet provider with build in wifi & Gargoyle

Post by b17gsr »

Hi all,

Under household pressure for faster Internet, I'm looking at switching from our old 6MB DSL package to a 100MB cable bundle through Eastlink. They use the Arris MGS5125G as a gateway.

Can I plug the WAN port into their gateway and see traffic required to maintain parental controls? Is there a way to disable the router's firewall completely with hopes of not limiting the built in wifi options / optional video streamer?

Just use the new modem as a pass through to gargoyle and then use gargoyle however you like.
It would be best to disable wireless on the modem. That would allow someone to directly connect to it and bypass traffic usage.
You can still access he modem itself from the gargoyle side of things with some simple tweaks.

I caved, getting the new package installed on Tuesday. They will have at least one gigabit Ethernet port to plug in our devices.

My plan is to plug the WAN Ethernet port from my Gargoyle router to their port and disable their wifi.

What changes are required to my Gargoyle configuration so all WAN traffic can be bidirectional? Their system includes a wireless streaming service for PVR. I hope I can reroute everything through the Gargoyle router.

Thanks

Usually just need to setup a static route telling Gargoyle where to find the other network.

There's a script that does this automatically for PPPoE connections, but with some tweaks you can run it for DHCP as well

Right now I use the "DHCP (wired)" option under Configuration, Basic.

If I try to ping from my DSL modem to the Gargoyle router, or any other device, I get zero pings.

i guess that means I have to add something under Configuration, Routing.

Did some reading, so I'll need to add a static routing in the router that comes from the cable company, and iptable edits to my Gargoyle router.

To say it politely, the Arris options are very limited.

Is there a way to implement all the edits on the Gargoyle router?

Network config:

Code: Select all

            Internet
                |
    |--- Arris Gateway ---|
    | |
Gargoyle Media Streamer
    |
Dlink AP
All Ethernet connections are Gigabit.

If I have the basic device configuration set as Gateway, WAN disabled and WAN Port set to Bridge to LAN, I have everything on one network. I can consistently download to 184Mbps (wireless), however none of the QoS / Monitoring / Parental controls work.

I'll have to fiddle with the Media Streamer later to see if it works. It does work if I have the Arris wifi enabled.

If I have the basic device configuration set as Gateway, DCHP (Wired) I end up with a second IP range. All QoS / Monitoring / Parental controls work, however throughput drops to ~50Mbps (wireless).

This is approx the maximum you can get on WiFi unless you use 802.11AC. The Gargoyle router you are using don't have enough cpu power to sustain 100Mbps internet connection anyway. See the benchmark threads for more info.

PM me if you need to buy Gargoyle router in Australia/NZ, willing to pay me to help you on your Gargoyle configurations or build custom configured ROM with pre-installed app or try to fix your bricked router. Yes, I am looking for job/work.
