Set static DNS

My ISP requires I set a static IP and a preferred and alternate (static) DNS. It was clear where to set the DNS in my old WRT54GL firmware but I just don't see where to set static DNS on this firmware. Can someone help? Thanks.

Referring to the latest version of Gargoyle (v1.3.4).

On the Connections->Basic screen find the "Local Network/LAN" section.

There is a check box to allow "Custom DNS servers".

Check the box, enter the address of the required DNS server.

Press Add and then Save for the page.

I do not want to set DNS for local network, I need to set DNS for the router to talk to my ISP.
I tried that out of desperation but it did not work, once I did that I had to change settings on my computer just to talk to the router again.

I tried this myself tonight. I followed the instructions I gave you setting one new custom DNS server. After I saved the setting my new DNS server showed up as the only DNS server listed under Overview->Status->"WAN DNS server". Did you check this point after you made the change?

Seems to work as I explained. Anyway an incorrect DNS server should not hinder your attempt to talk to the router. You should be using an IP address to talk to the router which does not need a DNS lookup to resolve. What settings did you change on your computer to get it to talk again?

I will admit that the naming of this setting on the UI can lead to someone one thinking what you do but in my test it changed the WAN DNS.

My DNS is set by DHCP at my computers and they all think the DNS server is my router. Only the router knows about the custom DNS server.

I am using v1.3.4 and WRT54G-TM and I have PPPoE connection to WAN.

Hello, Thanks for all the help. Please forgive my ignorance, I've taken over for someone who had to leave suddenly and am just now learning how these networks work. His only advice was to get control of the net by using the quota and bandwidth shaping features of Gargoyle. We are in Afghanistan using satellite internet and need to budget our bandwidth.

I must admit I tried only once and being under pressure to bring the network back up quickly I could easily have made a error. I will put the firmware back on today and try again. To answer your question as to what settings I changed to talk to the router again I have attached screen shot. I could have been confused and changing these settings may have been irrelevant.

Egads! It's working. Thank you so much for the help. The DNS servers appear just as you described under Status/Overview. I don't know what I did wrong the first time.

Glad to hear you got it working. I operate a satellite station in Africa for a charity so I feel you pain on the satellite budget. What are you doing in Afghanistan?
