[WZR-HP-G300NH2] Slow Wired Connection

Post by setham »

Hello,

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a Buffalo Tech wifi router wzr-hpg300nh2 with Gargoyle 1.8.1.

My ISP provider is Comcast and when connected directly to the modem with the speed I get (speedtest.net, xfinity speed test and netflix fast.com) averaged around 170 Mbs / 12Mb/s (see image from speedtest here: http://imgur.com/fCkf96o)

When I connect the laptop to the wzr-hp-g300nh2 ports the speed drops to ~28Mb/s / 7.8Mb/s. Same results with QoS enable and disable (at the moment no major traffic at home).

This is a huge drop on performance, unfortunately I can not compare or say that it's a new issue because I just switched service from DSL and this are my tests with the new service.

Any advise? troubleshooting? Is the router too old?

Thanks

Everybody with a fast internet connects are getting the same problems.

Faster routers are getting better results.

FYI installed OpenWrt Chaos Calmer 15.05.1 and speeds are closer to the ones I get when connected directly to the router.

- fast.com = 150Mbps
- speedtest.xfinity.com = 180Mbps/12Mbps
- speedtest.net = 179Mbps/12Mbps

With gargoyle 1.8.1 the fastest I was able to achieve was 29Mbps/8Mbs

Before instaling OpenWRT I cleared gargoyle configuration, reinstalled and tested and obtain the same results.

Thanks

Yep, I understand I we strip all the features out of gargoyle we would get the same speed.

There is a cost to monitoring and shaping traffic

@ispyisail not complaining just sharing my experience.

I enjoyed and used Gargoyle QoS features for over a year but having a 80% performance drop even with QoS off is not for me at this moment.

I think the reason for the performance drop goes beyond the overhead for shaping and monitoring.
