Remote access stopped working

Post by ViBE »

i have a TP-Link WR741ND router at "home". as far as i remember the last update what i installed was 1.6.2. so since i cannot reach the router physically i set up remote access (SSH, Webadmin). i also set a DDNS service. but for some reasons i cannot access the router a long time ago. i thought it's freeze but not cause scheduled restart works and the private IP always change. the DDNS service also refresh the address so basically the device is just online. i asked my relatives to shut down and restart it but nothing changed.

Check the port forwarding setting you previously configured for the remote access. Maybe the port forwarding setting have disappeared from the modem.

PM me if you need to buy Gargoyle router in Australia/NZ, willing to pay me to help you on your Gargoyle configurations or build custom configured ROM with pre-installed app or try to fix your bricked router. Yes, I am looking for job/work.

how do you mean? it's a single router which directly connets to the ISP. no modem.

Gargoyle does not have modem functionality, so you must have a modem somewhere connected to the Gargoyle router. Unless your ISP give you an ethernet cable that you plug into WAN port of Gargoyle, there is no way you can connect directly to your ISP. Even in such cases, you still need to configure your pppoe settings, etc...

Let say your Gargoyle is connected to your modem in bridge mode, port forwarding is handled and configured on Gargoyle router. If you lost remote access, try changing your remote accesss port. It is very likely your ISP decide to block the port you use for remote access, e.g. port 80 is almost always block by ISP to residential connection to stop people hosting public web servers at home.

i understand but still don't get it how is it related with my problem. i mean you talking about modem:

"Maybe the port forwarding setting have disappeared from the modem."

but as i said there is no modem cause it directly connecting. yeah, directly means FTTB network. maybe i was not enough clear but i don't mentioned before that i have a modem.

so what workaround needed? open port 80 on the remote router? btw if i ping the router it only answer once since this problem came up.

I am not sure how FTTB works but I am pretty sure there is a modem there somewhere, maybe you just don't recognize it. I have used NBN FTTP and there is a fibre modem provided.

In the NBN modem I was using, the Gargoyle router needs to be VLAN tagged in order to connect to the network through the fibre modem. (I have a thread on the Gargoyle forum with exact details on how this was configured.)

I have already told you the answer in the last post. I said do NOT use port 80 because it is typically blocked by ISP, i.e. use anything until you get something that works but don't use any standard ports.

Without fully understanding how your router connects to internet, this is the best answer I can provide. I am pretty sure your problem is related to port forwarding or blocked ports, not Gargoyle itself.

ethernet cable on the endpoint. that's all...

fine. i will change the port as soon as possible. i don't really get it why the ISP started to block it after long years.

You have opened port 22 for SSH?

yes of course. nothing changed on the router, cause i'm the only one who use it and i have no reason to change it. i'm sure now that's not related with Gargoyle cause i replaced that router with an unopened one and i also set remote access and i cannott access it now.

Can you ping the WAN port? (Ping needs to be enabled)
