QoS locking speeds down

Post by pkm »

Occasionally i will run into a problem where the QoS ACC will lock speeds to somewhere between 0.5-0.6Mbps. Have to restart the router to fix that. Is there a way to prevent it from happening? It can get very annoying when in the middle of a game and suddenly your connection is 100% saturated.

Best to upgrade your firmware to 1.8.1 and see what happens. Maybe it is already fixed?

PM me if you need to buy Gargoyle router in Australia/NZ, willing to pay me to help you on your Gargoyle configurations or build custom configured ROM with pre-installed app or try to fix your bricked router. Yes, I am looking for job/work.

Sounds like ACC is being too aggressive. Do any of your rules have minRTT enabled? If so, disable minRTT on those rules.

If you don't have minRTT enabled or if it happens after disabling that, I can also suggest changing to ACC ping target, such as to Google DNS or OpenDNS (8.8.8.8 or 208.67.222.222) depending which has closest servers to you (lower pings).
QoS Tip: Don't complicate your QoS settings. Gargoyle evenly splits available bandwidth between active devices as needed. Just delete all your classification rules and leave only one normal service class and you're done. No more arguing over bandwidth.

Yeah, i need minrtt for my gaming rules. Also the IPs you suggested are all pretty far for me around 88ms. I'm using a closer one which is the first hop out of my network gives me 40ms.

Does minRTT make much of a difference for you, though? With minRTT off, if I saturate my connection (with a big download or a torrent) and speedtest using another device, my pings remain in the 20s (which is my norm). minRTT is too aggressive on my connection and eats up bandwidth even without saturating the connection, which is what I suspect is happening with you. If you haven't, you should test your ping times with a saturated connection with and without minRTT to compare the difference.

88ms isn't too bad; mine's around 60ms and works rock solid. Gargoyle adjusts and can manage, but like I said, I think it's minRTT causing your issue.

Post a screen shot while the problem is happening. Make sure your screen shot shows then entire download screen.

Like I said this is an occasional thing so not sure when it will happen again.

In ACC, your current ping in that screen is higher than the ping limit, so ACC is working as designed. High ping = keep lowering link limit until ping drops.

The issue now is, why is that ping so high when you're just at 500kbps of your 3000kbps connection? Does your ISP get that congested? (could be for certain smaller ISPs, especially WISPs)

Well I've read the guide on acc and yeah it's either that or aggressive ping targets. I've tried different ping targets and it still happens.

I'm not sure if it is congestion though, never had issues like that with my current ISP (internode). When I was with optus I was definitely suffering from congestion years ago. But my connection has always been rock solid with internode.

How can I tell for sure if it is my ISP that is the problem?
