Glitches in Gargoyle 1.9.0 (the Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300 F/WARE

Post by kgaamangwe »

Good day,

I am Kgotso Gaamangwe from the Republic of Botswana (www.gov.bw) , I run an ISP and I an a seasoned network/data comms and info systems security professional. Since I have 10 of the Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300 dual band routers with GIG LAN ports as well as aGIG WAN port, complemented by high RAM and Flash plus a relatively fast processor. I thought they are well suited to play a Bandwidth Quota apportioning role in my core internet bandwidth network.

From last week I initially spent around 2 whole days reading about Gargoyle , and took the plunge to install ver 1.9.0 on one of these routers. This went well with no glitches, followed by tinkering around with the features on this one router up to yesterday (22/2/2016).

I then set it up for integration into my core network, and over lunch hour attempted to install it in the core network. The connected PC's would show internet access being available, but when trying to browse the net , no sites could be reached. I have battled with this problem from approx 11hrs30 yesterday(GMT+2) till 12hrs00 today (23/2/2016), with no luck.

I then consciously decided to downgrade the firmware to 1.8.1 and with the same settings , it just plain sailing worked i.e clients connected to the internet and able to browse.

My before and after WAN and LAN settings are:

WAN:
- Connect via = DHCP Wired
Then click on DHCP renew to obtain the WAN DHCP settings
Everything else under WAN settings is left unchecked.

LAN:

Router IP: 192.168.3.1
Mask 255.255.255.0

DNS Servers = Default DNS Servers Specified By ISP

Then checked the boxes for:
- Allow NameCoin/OpenNIC Resolution
- Force Clients To Use Router DNS Servers

Conclusion:
There is a DNS glitch in the 1.9.0 experimental version of the firmware for these Buffalo routers, since the same settings work fine with the settings detailed above using version 1.8.1 for these routers.

Plea For Help:

Developers please look into this matter and rectify.

Thank you

Hi Kgotso,

When using the experimental branch, I would always recommend staying up to date with the latest code. This can be downloaded here:
http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/vi ... =14&t=8402
We label these versions, 1.9.X.

That being said, I don't see why upgrading to this version would fix your issue, but being on the same page as far as testing is certainly beneficial.

What trouble shooting steps did you try to confirm that it was a DNS issue?
  • Untick force router DNS, and manually set a clients DNS server to known server (e.g. 8.8.8.8). Does this resolve the issue?
  • Untick force router DNS, and manually set a clients DNS server to the ISP DNS. Does this resolve the issue?
  • Set DNS servers to "Custom" and enter the gateway IP as the DNS server. Does this resolve the issue?
My suspicion is that the last one will reveal the most information.

Finally, no one else has reported this issue, so please bare with us while we try to figure out what is going on.

Please be respectful when posting. I do this in my free time on a volunteer basis.

After installing 1.8.1 and everything working, did you try upgrading to 1.9 again to see if it worked or broke again (when upgrading with sysupgrade file, don't save settings)?

I'm only asking because in the past I have noticed funny things (such as plugins not installing) when first going from DDWRT to Gargoyle on my Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 routers. But a failsafe reset or upgrading/downgrading/reinstallation fixed issues.

Failsafe:

QoS Tip: Don't complicate your QoS settings. Gargoyle evenly splits available bandwidth between active devices as needed. Just delete all your classification rules and leave only one normal service class and you're done. No more arguing over bandwidth.
