WRT54GL Install Check?
Hi,
Unfortunately we cannot get the preinstalled routers in Australia so I could only find the WRT54GL available here.
So I have one here now - hardware version 1.1. Just wanted to double check the install procedure.
a) Just login via web interface to the standard interface.
b) Upload this file "gargoyle_1.3.2-wrt54g-squashfs.bin" to firmware using the "Administration>Firmware" of standard interface & "upgrade"
c) Let it do its stuff & reboot & Done!
Just wanted to check thats the correct process and thats the correct firmware version for the WRT54GL .
Cheers,
Penfold (not wanting to brick the router he just bought)

You might want to hold off until someone gives you confirmation. Your instructions are *exactly* what I did with my 2 hour-old WRT54GL v1.1 and it doesn't seem to be answering anymore (after the report saying that the upgrade was successful).
I'm not panicking yet, but I'd wait to see if that someone knowledgeable indicates that this is what you are supposed to do.

And good thing I didn't panic. Half an hour later and two power downs later and bang, I'm in business. Maybe it took a little time to contemplate its new identity.

Hmm, well flash went well.
Seems to be OK. But having a few issues with net browsing slowing down, dropouts through router, sometimes not responding . But really need to configure it a bit and give it some more testing/uptime.

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
Those of you that have the WRT54GL's
Can you check and show the RAM usage on this?
Reason being, a few of us that have the WRT54G-TM's
use the same firmware image, and on the WRT54G-TM,
we can see RAM usage of 17-18MB of RAM.
That being the case, the WRT54GL's only have 16MB of RAM,
so those have to be close to max usage with everything enabled.
Please post the RAM amounts if you have a WRT54GL and are
using one of the backfire firmares - 1.3.x series - thanks!

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
Device Name: Gargoyle
Gargoyle Version: 1.3.2
Device Configuration: Gateway
Memory Usage: 13.2MB / 14MB (94.5%)
CPU Load Averages: 0.10 / 0.05 / 0.01 (1/5/15 minutes)
** Seems to be OK so far **
At the moment I'm having a bit of a problem convincing it to save the quotas => nothing is saved under active
** EDIT - saving ok now **

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
Wow - so yea, it is really close on max'ing out the RAM on those.
At some point, if you have too much stuff enabled, that router
may start to crash - keep an eye on the RAM usage and
all the things you enable, like QoS, monitoring, etc.

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
Yeh seems to sit at the 13mb or so used.
Will keep an eye on it to see how it goes for rest of month. At the moment quotas is really the only extra module running - Web monitoring and QoS are not setup. I haven't put the router on the main part of the network yet ( just me connected, not the 3 other pcs). Out of curiosity how big is the memory footprint of 1.2.*?

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
Hmm, been a few months since I had 1.2 firmware loaded.
I think it used a little less than the 1.3.x series.
Maybe up to 1Mb less, but then again, I never had
any of the web monitoring/qos/etc enabled.
I just did basic functionality and routing/wireless access.

Re: WRT54GL Install Check?
One thing I did notice that when the router loses power is that it saves all the quota data. Fantastic! The only wierd thing though is that the time stays incorrect until I go into settings and click on the time zone again and hit save. I found this out because it set the peak quotas out by a few hours. It happened a few times so its pretty repeatable too.
Anyway working very well,
