SOLVED: Can ping from router but not from computer

Post by rhodie »

We have a TL-WR1043ND that we bought with Gargoyle 1.5.10 pre-installed. It's worked great for two+ years.

This morning, though, I stopped being able to connect to the internet through it. I can SSH into the router and ping, say, google.com successfully.

Code: Select all

root@Gargoyle:~# ping google.com
PING google.com (216.58.217.46): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.58.217.46: seq=0 ttl=55 time=608.982 ms
64 bytes from 216.58.217.46: seq=1 ttl=55 time=606.414 ms
64 bytes from 216.58.217.46: seq=2 ttl=55 time=606.418 ms
However, from my laptop the ping fails with

Code: Select all

rhodie@laptop:[~]: ping 216.58.217.46
PING 216.58.217.46 (216.58.217.46) 56(84) bytes of data.
From gargoyle (192.168.1.1) icmp_seq=1 Destination Port Unreachable
From gargoyle (192.168.1.1) icmp_seq=2 Destination Port Unreachable
From gargoyle (192.168.1.1) icmp_seq=3 Destination Port Unreachable
I haven't tried resetting the router yet because we have a fairly elaborate quota system set up that I'm hoping not to have to redo.

The WLAN light on the router is blinking steadily. I'm not sure if it always does that or if that indicates a problem.

I presume that you have tried to power the router off and pack on again?

Have you checked pinging Google with connecting your PC to another LAN port on the router - and with a new cable - and with a different PC?

You can make a backup of your quota setup (and all other setups)
Gargoyle - System - Backup / Restore - Backup Current Configuration - Get Backup Now
Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've tried powering the router off and back on again.

I have checked pinging google from my laptop wirelessly and wired. Other devices on the LAN are not able to load webpages, but I haven't tried pinging from them.

I'm wondering if this may have to do with our ISP rather than with Gargoyle. I noticed that our IP address changed at the time we stopped being able to connect to the internet. Also, not sure if it's relevant, but we can connect to other devices on the LAN, such as a wireless printer.

Thanks for the backup suggestion.

OK - In that case I would

first connect a laptop directly to your internet connection (ie eliminate Gargoyle) and see if you can browse websites. If you cannot browse direct then it is likely an ISP issue.

second is may be a problem with your DNS setting on Gargoyle (ie your ISP has changed something but it does not work with your old dns setup)
Gargoyle - Connection - Basic - Local Network/LAN - DNS Servers
Probably the most likely to work option is
"Default DNS Servers Specified by ISP"

I have found the issue: there was a rule under Firewall -> Access Restrictions that restricted all hosts from all network access. Not sure how that got there, but removing it fixed the problem.

Thanks again for your help!

great - glad you got it sorted. Odd though. Had you interacted at all with the router when the problem arose - or was it completely out of the blu?

After I posted that, I told my family I had found the problem and my son (who was away yesterday afternoon and evening) piped up "oh, sorry -- I added that rule to try to keep myself off the internet. I didn't realize it would affect everyone."
