need help

Post by lonewolph »

I'm on a 1.5 Megabit DSL connection. I wanted a minimum amount of bandwidth to play World of Warcraft, and want to stop all video streaming /music streaming if possible or slow it down a lot. I tried a QoS Guide on games but i cant get my games to go into the "Games" Class....
What should my total upload/download bandwidth be? 1500?

i figured it out... had my IP wrong. working correctly now. How should I go about calculating bandwidth and minimum kp for a "game" class, on a 1.5 mb connection? does 50kb minimum 40% bandwidth sound right?

those calculations are covered in the Gargoyle for Gamers tutorial.

just a little confused because the router says kilobit per second not kilobyte..? So I need to convert my 1.5 MB to Kilobit, not kilobytes? So 12000 would be my download bandwidth or do I have this wrong?

you have listed megaBIT in your first post
and your last post says MB "megaBYTE".

which is it? post us screenshots of your speed.

1.5 megaBITS = 1500 kiloBITS
1.5 megaBYTES = 12000 kiloBITS

sorry i apologize I am a noob. My modem says it connects at 1500. My ISP says I have a speed of 1.5 (doesnt specify megabit or megabyte). My download speeds max out at 160ish KiloBYTEs per second. Is there somewhere I can verify my speed? does the gargoyle router specify it somewhere?

Gargoyle - Status - Bandwidth Usage - Bandwidth Graph Display Options

Based on your last post, it sounds like you are on a 1.5 megabit connection or 1500 kilobits. You can verify this at speedtest.net. It may read slightly lower than your maximum speed (which is what the ACC function of Gargoyle should account for).

For your own knowledge, and this should answer your question for what numbers you need to enter into the router.

KBps = kiloBYTES per second
Kbps = kiloBITS per second

Notice the changing capitalisation of the "B"?

To convert between them, there are 8 bits in a byte.

1 KBps = 8 Kbps
Based on your download example you specified:
160KBps = 1280Kbps so approximately 1500.

Now that we are all on the same page, try following the guide once more, and then come back with additional questions :)
