I do not know - I have never found myself in this situation and I have been unable to locate a clear statement of the differences between sysupgrade.bin and factory.bin. This post is the best I can find:

Based on this post it may not matter which file you use at this point! (given that you have Gargoyle almost running)

My guess is that either your downloaded file is corrupted or your cable is faulty. I would re-download sysupgrade.bin, do a checksum on it, get a known-good network cable and then flash fro the Gargoyle GUI.
