Firewall Restrictions - Schedule not working

Post by BernieBone »

Hello...

I have a Firewall Restriction rule set to block certain Microsoft domains to prevent users from downloading Windows updates during my ISP's "metered" period. Our ISP does not meter from midnight to 6AM, so I have no problem letting users use that time period to download their updates.

I have the rule scheduled for "Every Day", hours active 05:55-23:55. My problem is that the domains I have blocked are still blocked outside of the rule's scheduled time, as in anytime between midnight and 6 AM. I have to disable the rule in order for the Windows updates to start.

Would you please take a look at the screen shot of the rule to see what I am doing wrong? Thank you!

Specs: Gargoyle Version:1.6.2
Model: TP-Link TL-WDR4300 v1

I've never had much luck with restrictions but haven't you "blocked all" with your other rules?

Allow all except......Block only...??

Hi ispy... I'm not sure I follow what you are saying. The rule I set blocks all users from getting to those Microsoft sites, and it does a great job of that. I am truly glad that part of the rule works just fine. I guess my problem is that the scheduling part of the rule is not working as I think it should. The rule seems to be in effect all of the time, instead of the hours I set it for.

I have quotas set up for a lot of users, and those quotas are scheduled for certain hours as well, and those rules work just fine, turning on and off at their specified times.

I just wish I could figure out why this restriction rule is not behaving the time schedule.

Does anyone know if this is a bug, or did I simply configure the rule's schedule incorrectly?

Tip

1.6.x is effectively finished

If you download the current RC build and prove your problems. Make it easy for Eric to understand (screen shots) he is more likely to have a look at it.

Research and Presentation is everything.

If you are doing tests make sure you do a failsafe reset first.

The last thing Eric wants is for the fault not to happen on his device.

I went ahead and set an Exception rule to "Allow All Network Access" hours (opposite of the hours set in the Access Restriction Rule), and this has solved my problem. Now all the sites I want blocked are only blocked during the scheduled Access Restricted time, and they are available during the scheduled Exception time. Issue resolved. Thanks!
