"Connected Hosts" is always empty

Post by ngg.online »

Hi,

I was wandering what exactly is the purpose of the Status->Connected Hosts overview. It is always empty on my Gargoyle Routers. I use Gargoyle 1.1.2 on 2 x FON2100 and 1 x DIR-300. One of the FON routers is used as a WDS repeater and the other two routers are connected via DHCP and are used as AP. On all 3 Routers the Connected Hosts is always empty - noting on Current DHCP Leases, Connected Wireless Hosts nor Hosts With Active Connections. I am also unable to see which wireless clients are currently connected to the router. Is the Connected Hosts overview supposed to show this, or where can I find this information?

Thank you!

Anyone? Is this a normal behavior?

Does it give an IP address of the Unknown?

Usually, its an internal IP or the 127.0.0.1 (loopback) IP address.

I've seen that before on my Fon 2201+

I think its nothing to worry about.

But who knows... THEY may be out to snoop you...

Hmm... I could've sworn this had an Unknown host title earlier.
My comments may be irrelevant.

I'll check from home and see if my Fon 2201+ shows clients.

No, it's not normal behavior. If wireless is active it should show all currently connected wireless devices. If the DHCP server is active, it will show all dhcp leases. "Active connections" lists the MAC addresses/IPs of all hosts that have passed data through the router in the last couple of minutes. I just checked on my system running 1.1.2, and this data is displaying correctly for me -- I'm not sure why you wouldn't see anything if there are hosts with active connections connected to your router.

Ok, I did a little bit of testing and here are my results:

* When I connect my Gargoyle router directly to my DSL modem via PPPoE then every is correctly displayed in the Connected Hosts overview.

* When I connect the router via DHCP (wireless or wired) to another router, which is connected to the DSL modem via PPPoE, then everything is OK as well.

So far so good!

* However, when I disable the WAN, or the other router is not connected to the Internet, then the Connected Hosts overview is empty, although there are connected wireless clients.

* When I use my Gargoyle router as Bridge/Repeater the Connected Hosts overview is empty as well. This is the case in both modes - Connect Via WDS / Connect Via Client Bridge, although there are connected wireless clients.

I think in the last two points the behavior of the router is unexpected and therefore is this a bug. Hopefully this will not be the case in future versions.

@ngg.online Yes, I experience the same thing as well.

I have the WAN disabled, and DHCP disabled, as I am using my wireless router simply as an access point, with my pfSense firewall doing the DHCP/DNS/Gateway etc.

Oh forgot to add, I'm running Gargoyle 1.1.2 on a WRT54GL.

2 Questions for Eric:

Do you consider this to be a bug as well, and do you have plans to fix this in future versions?

Thank you!

Well.. I'll agree there's a bug, but not quite the one you report.

The bug is that the "active connections" section and "connection list" section is being displayed in bridge mode. These should disappear when you're in bridge mode, because the report that there are no active connections is what is expected.

The router only keeps track of connections where it is one of the end-points. This is how the conntrack table, which is what is used to generate the list, is implemented. When the router is just a bridge, the table should be empty.

The real problem/error is that I didn't automatically hide this data (which will be empty/meaningless) when you put the router in bridge mode.

Is it possible to show connected wireless clients that have connected to the repeater when its in repeater mode?
