Install the file system you need.
NTFS is supported by Openwrt, i.e. gargoyle
http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/usb.storage

You can install app such as miniDLNA
http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/minidlna

or
Ushare
http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/ushare

My NTFS-formatted USB drive worked fine with Gargoyle 1.5.10 OOTB
However, following the instructions on your second link (http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/minidlna) produced:

WARNING: Could not retrieve package list for gargoyle.

root@Gargoyle:~# opkg install minidlna
ERROR: No package named minidlna found, try updating your package lists
 

Have you an idea what is wrong, or do I need to ask on the OpenWRT forum?

Are you sure your gargoyle router is connected to internet?

try a reset of your router to clear everything you have installed.
command is firstboot
