Help with install on D-Link DIR-615 rev C1

Hi all

I need clarification on how to install Gargoyle on my D-Link DIR-615 rev C1 router. I have searched the forum and found several thread regarding a successful installation but never how they did it.

Should I Reset the router to factory defaults including FW version.
Then login to the web gui and update the FW with: gargoyle_1.5.9-ar71xx-generic-dir-615-c1-squashfs-factory.bin
Then login to the Gargoyle gui and start configuring it


or

Do I have to install DD-WRT before installing Gargoyle

Any comments or help is appreciated.

Is it safe to say that if you can find the gargoyle_1.5.9-ar71xx-generic-(your model)-squashfs-factory.bin firmware in the Download section that you can flash your factory default firmware router using the update feature First you must confirm that your hardware version if any is compatible.

Or is it safer to say that you need to flash your router with OpenWRT or DDWRT then update it with Gargoyle?

Yes.. keep an eye on the model number in the file name itself. Don't flash the wrong one..

Ok so I installed Gargoyle 1.5.9 on my Dlink and I've been running it for close to 2 weeks now and its working great.

What sort of speed do you get on the 615 with Gargoyle? Am thinking about getting a few to distribute wireless around the house.

There is no noticeable speed gain. I was in it for the quota management.

Let me answer my own question:

It's not listed on the page for some reason, but 1.6.2 is available here:

I don't know why traces of the DIR-615 were removed.

Managed to flash successfully. So far, am pleased with the layout. DD-WRT is too cluttered, this is a breath fo fresh air.

Will have to test it in a productive environment to check for stability.

Thank you so much for giving me an alternative to DD-WRT which is buggy.

edit: Used the recovery method to flash, instead of meddling around with mtd and telnet. Much easier. Just unplug the router, hold the reset button down in the back, and turn the router on. Will blink to indicate recovery mode. Go to 192.168.0.1 and flash away. You might need to modify the string at the end of the firmware to match the current one.
