WRT54GL router install

Post by shadow000 »

Hi,

I am looking to install Gargoyle on my WRT54GL. I read through some articles on this site and there might not be enough memory on my router.

I have WRT54GL ver 1.1 (which I bought around 2011) I am running OpenWrt Backfire 10.03.1-rc5 on it but have occasional issues when downloading at high speeds, it will just topple over. Hence I want to try out gargoyle.

OpenWRT shows I have total 13.07 MB that should be enough for gargoyle install, right?

Thanks

The WRT54GL has 4MB Flash and 16MB Ram

I would recommend Gargoyle 1.3.9 as that uses the old Broadcom
drivers that worked with the WRT54GL

The newer broadcom drivers have caused issues for people.

Flash Gargoyle 1.3.9 and if it works for you - stick with that

If you have OpenWRT Backfire installed, you can upgrade to
Gargoyle 1.3.9 via the OpenWRT GUI (if you have luci)
or you can upgrade via command line - use this file:

gargoyle_1.3.9-wrt54g-squashfs.bin

2x Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH V1 A0D0 = Gargoyle 1.9.x / LEDE 17.01.x
2x Engenius - ESR900 Stock 1.4.0 / OpenWRT Trunk 49400

Thanks, DoesItMatter! This helps.

I am bit concerned about bricking the router - how can I verify (through LuCI or ssh) that I have 4Mb of flash?
Both ssh and LuCI are a bit cryptic to discern what is RAM and what is flash.

Also, does gargoyle has IPv6 support?

What type of internet do you have?

The WRT54GL will top out at about 10mbps download.

If you have higher than that - you NEED a new router.

The WRT54GL was a great router but no longer can keep up
with higher speed downloads.

IPV6 is in the newer versions of OpenWRT - not sure about Gargoyle.

Since you have OpenWRT already - you could try the
Attitude Adjustment 12.09 final release and see how it performs
on your WRT54GL - this is the link:

http://downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_a ... uashfs.bin

You should be able to upgrade from your current version
to the final Attitude Adjustment WRT54G version linked above.

I have a regular cable internet. What I noticed is it would crash if the download speed was right over 1Mbps
Not sure why that's happening.

Thanks for pointers. Will try out newer versions of OpenWRT first.
Will let you know.
