Connection Limits - Why?

Hey guys,

I've just been looking through the options for Gargoyle, and I've been running it for a few months totally without issue. It's been awesome!

I have a question regarding connection limits, found in the "Firewall" Menu - Why would I want to set this higher? Or lower? I've got a TP-Link WDR4300 which I understand has some pretty beastly specs, so I assume it could take it - but why would I want to increase the amount of connections it can do?

You would need to do this if your connection table overflowed with too many connections.

This can happen if you have several users, especially if using torrents.

To see how connections you are using go to the connections page. I think it is also listed on the status page.

I agree that you have available memory in your router to increase the default value if you want.

Ah, OK... So it does nothing to impede performance in anyway? It's safe to increase the amount? What should I increase it to? I've been having trouble googling to find a guide - is it merely trial and error?

I did testing with PBix on a WRT54G-TM @ 200MHZ

I had 8 simultaneous torrents, and anywhere from 500-1000
simultaneous connections going at once.

I slowed the router to a CRAWL - the router could NOT handle this.

I never even hit maximum bandwidth, the limitation was the CPU.

If you have a 500mhz cpu router - and you're doing a ton of torrents,
the maximum connections I would suggest would be around 2500

I would not increase the 4096 connection limit, you'll never hit it on
a home user / commercial router.

Leave the 4096 connections as default on the router.

You should probably decrease TCP - 300 and leave UDP at default.
