SSH into the router

i know how to access the router using ssh, but i wanted to know if there was anything useful i could actually do. like i know i can check folder, make files and folders, move files and folders. is there a way to download the files or open them in the command line with something like pico. like i would love to be able to check my network usage when i am at school or out and about. I thought if i could download a file called quota_ALL_combined
