Add Delay (ms) Help?

Post by omgeggman »

Hi guys, I'm a big fan of Gargoyle, it's been amazing for QOS and stuff.
I was wondering whether or not I could artificially add delay, or increase the ping, for certain user of my network?

I've searched the forums to no avail, and I've tried just lowering the upload speed but it's not enough. Any help would be appreciated :D

Lowering the speed of a user is the same as adding delay so I cannot understand what it meant by "it was not enough".

Perhaps you should describe your situation in more detail, including what you have tried to do.

Sure! Thanks for responding so quickly!

Essentially, I am trying to increase the latency of a certain user in my network. Whether by throttling his upload/download, I want to increase it to a point where his latency isn't unbearably high (1000ms) but it isn't the fastest either. (at least 150ms).

I have created a rule in Gargoyle using the QOS function. I essentially created a classification for his static IP (I did all the DHCP stuff), and put him into a ruleset where his upload is limited to 200 kbps, and his upload to 5000kbs.

Am I on the right track, or am I lost? If you need more information, ask away. Thanks!

You cannot control "latency" directly but what you have done seems appropriate. Making him his own class will limit his bandwidth.

So what problem are you having and why do you think you want to control "latency" for this user?

The thing is, I have the QOS and quota settings setup so that past a certain time, games like Call of Duty will be unplayable for my brother. He's in his last years of high school, so our mum doesn't want him to play as late. So basically, I want 'secretly' get him to stop playing because I want to think that the connection gets terrible at night. And so far it's been working.

That's the why.

The problem is that it doesn't seem to be working anymore. The new Call of Duty has some lag compensation netcode that alleviates some of the difference in ping, and the game is still playable. I just want to bump the ping up higher, but the upload speed is as low as the game will allow (to connect to other games, the servers, etc.). This is why I'm asking for help, essentially I want to increase latency, without touching upload speed.

It seems the game knows the minimum acceptable bandwidth that it can play with so I cannot think of a way to accomplish your goal with Gargoyle.
