(updated) Extremely Slow Wireless, Please help.

Post by Eldon »

Hi Guys,

Thanks for having me at your forum.

I bought a Netgear WNDR3800 today and installed gargoyle_1.4.7-ar71xx-wndr3800-squashfs-factory as this was the latest stable version. I have the WNDR3800 connected via DHCP (wired) to my Netgear CG3100 which is in bridge mode (firewall, wifi, NAT and all other setting turned off).

Everything works great but i have only 1 issue.

- My wireless is unfortunately only giving 20% of my regular internet bandwidth. I am not sure what you may need to know however i will provide as much info as possible.

I have the wifi set as follows:
AP mode
Dual band 40mhz 2nd chanel below
Transmit power set to max for both 2.4 & 5ghz

I have tried changing channels, sitting right next to the router, unplugging all of the cordless phones, switching to 20mhz, using the 5ghz mode and nothing works, it seems fairly consistent speed wise regardless of if i am next to the router or in the lounge room with it only getting worse on 20mhz.

I am wondering if i should upgrade Gargoyle or if maybe there is another option?

Thank you for your help guys, it is much appreciated.

Eldon.

NB: The wireless on the CG3100 by itself gives me the same download speed as on lan (limited by my connection)

EDIT: Changing the security from WEP to WPA PSK increased the speed from 17mbits to 51mbits. My original speed is about 90mbits/s, so improved but not resolved.

EDIT 2: I did some digging around and found that it helps to 30/30/30 reset (factory reset button) to clear the nvram. I then didn't change really any settings at all rather all i did was just add WPA2 PSK security and left the rest as factory. (tried both 20mhz and 40mhz and got similar speed)

This took me from 51 next to the router to 75mbits, so this is good enough for me.

If you have any other thoughts please feel free to advise, if not i hope this helps someone else with the same issue.

Thanks guys!

You'll need to post your settings, including QoS if you have it turned on. I have the 3800 and it's working fine. I don't get 300 Mbps but that's because I don't have any Wireless n devices capable of supporting that. All the wireless n devices I have can only support 150 Mbps.

I hate to resurrect such an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue as the OP. I switched from vanilla OpenWRT to Gargoyle to see if that would change anything, but no dice.

Here's my setup:

-Router is a Netgear WNDR3800.

-Currently running Gargoyle 1.5.8. I tested 1.4.7 as well and the issue
persists.

-Doesn't matter if the WiFi is set to operate in dual-band mode, N+G+B, or just G+B. Changing wireless channels has no effect either.

-Security is WPA2 PSK.

-No changes have been made to the firewall whatsoever.

Same as the OP stated, if I connect to the router via ethernet cable, internet speeds are fine (I get around 50Mbps normally). Over wireless however, the speed drops to anywhere between 7-15Mbps.

I've been googling around non-stop for the past three days and I haven't found any solid information on this.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

Try look for an answer at Openwrt.org and post back here.
