Help Openvpn crashes wndr3700

Post by cheezit73 »

Hello,

I have searched the forums and cannot find an answer to my problem.

I just installed Gargoyle 1.5.8 on my WNDR3700 v1. The router has been running great for the last 24 hours until I tried to setup Openvpn which is my main reason for installing Gargoyle.

I setup the server settings and then setup the first client. after doing so I went to download the client configuration zip and the router management window froze and i lost internet connectivity on all attached devices and could no longer access the router.

If I reboot the router it will work for a moment and you can access the router management but once you access a webpage or a few minutes pass it stops working again.

If I access the management page right after a reboot I can turn Openvpn off and then the router works just fine.

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it!

Anybody?

Not trying to be impatient, i just have only just begun to explore 3rd party router firmware and am not that familiar with it. should this be working, do I maybe need to re-install gargoyle?

Thanks

If you can still access the Gargoyle GUI - turn off OpenVPN and
re-flash 1.5.8 but do not keep settings.

gargoyle_1.5.8-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

You should be able to use that version to flash from the GUI.

Keep your config as simple as possible once you re-flash.

Once you get everything configured, except OpenVPN,
make a backup of your current config so you can always restore
the router back to a working config.

Then try the OpenVPN config once again.

You should have plenty of flash and ram space.

Thank you so much for the advice. Yes I can access the GUI as router is working great with openvpn off.

One question I am in north america and when I first loaded Gargoyle I used the -na Factory file. Was that correct thing to do? I assume since the sysupgrade file does not have a specific one for na thats ok? I will try what you said tonight and let you know.

The initial flash version should match where you bought the router.

USA models should always use NA / USA firmwares

Outside the USA - you would want to use UK / EU etc because they
have different CRDA regulations than the USA

The sysupgrade should work on any router and it will access the
CRDA info stored in the device.

Ok some progress and a little more help requested.

I reflashed 1.5.8 and set it up with just two computers on my LAN and then setup openvpn. It took longer this time to do the first setting save of Openvpn which I think was good. It was working fine until I changed an option in the openvpn configuration and hit save, then while it was saving I used my second computer to try and browse the web...bad idea I guess as it froze the router and went back to square one regarding the router freezing. :( So I have reflashed yet again and am going to try and setup Openvpn again with only one pc attached and being more careful.

Second problem is while openvpn was working I tried to use openvpn connect on my android phone to connect to the vpn and recieved this error:

"Tun interface setup failed: tun_builder_error: ifconfig addresses are not in the same /30 subnet (topology net30)"

I have really been trying to research this and am a bit over my head, best I can figure out is that I might be missing things I need to configure in the routing table and firewall but all the guides are for cli on openwrt.

Could you guide me as to how to configure this in the gargoyle gui?

Thanks so much for your help and patience with this noob!

Well solved most my problems.... Turns out the server is actually working just fine and the problem is on the android end. Tested the access with openvpn client running on a laptop and it connects to the openvpn server no problem. The android phone however errors when using the official openvpn connect app but works fine with the other popular openvpn app on the play store. So I am up and running. Thanks for those who created and shared this firmware!
