The $50 dollar question

Post by Coder56 »

Hi,

Well i wrote a previous post before about buying a netgear DGN2200 V1 ADSL modem router and hooking it up with another router with Gargoyle pre installed on it. But i couldn't see any configuration in the netgear ADSL modem to put it into bridge mode. It only supports wireless bridging by point to point bridging, multi point bridging and also something called wireless client association.

From the manual:
Repeater with Wireless Client Association
In the repeater mode with wireless client association, the DGN2200 wireless-N modem router
sends all traffic to a remote AP. For the repeater mode, you must enter the MAC address of the
remote “parent” access point. Alternatively, you can configure the DGN2200 wireless-N modem
router as the parent by entering the address of a “child” access point.

I guess the last option might actually work (provided gargoyle can be configured as a wireless repeater and I can enforce all traffic through the gargoyle router) but it would effect throughput.

ALternatively, Thought about getting a new ADSL2 modem that is compatible with this and looking at: TP_LINK_TD_8840T_ADSL2_Modem_Router

http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j ... kWR8YBAfGQ

Firstly, if I put the ADSL2 modem in WIRED bridge mode (connected to the gargoyle modem and adsl2 modem with a RJ45 cable), do you normally select to use as "Gateway" on gargoyle in the setup config?

What are the diffrent ways you can use gargoyle to link it up with your ADSL2 modem?

Get an inexpensive used DSL modem on EBay.

This is the one I have http://www.ebay.com/itm/Westell-LiteLin ... 3f1b1607c7 and it works great.

This modem can be put in bridge mode easily and cost $10.

Your Gargoyle router will be configured in Gateway mode and the connection type will be "PPPoE".

Finally sell your DGN2200 on Ebay and keep the change.

Just a question, can gargoyle be configured as a pure wireless access point only? I just pluged in a netgear wireless access point into my wireless adsl modem router by a RJ45 cable and was fine accessing the internet connected through the wireless access point. I'm wondering if I can do this with gargoyle? That is:

a) Turn DHCP server off on the gargoyle router (It will get the ip address and dns settings from my ADSL modem router)
c) Turn off wifi on my ADSL2 modem router so that all wireless clients have to connect through gargoyle instead.
d) Turn on DHCP server on the ADSL2 Modem Router and have the LAN ip address fixed to known MAC addresses.
e) Turn on wifi on the gargoyle router.

When gargoyle gets a packet, it will just forward on the packet "as is" to my adsl modem router and vice versa.

Yes that'll work fine, you'll just have double-NAT, that's all.
