Satellite ISP connection

Post by George5164 »

We just started using a satellite internet connection and discovered that we had no idea of how much bandwidth we really use. Next month the ISP will start charging by the gigabit over the limit. We've been trying to find a way to monitor and record daily internet traffic to and from each of device on our LAN. Of the seven devices on our wired gigabit LAN plus the occasional wireless device four regularly go to the internet over our satellite ISP. I don't really know what the best approach to monitoring this really is. If one PC should get a virus and call home a lot, a device total of traffic would show that up immediately. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

The Gargoyle quota feature is your best bet. Apply a quota to each of the 7 computers and watch their usage.

I manage a satellite station in Africa where internet usage is very expensive. Their I use www.hotspotsystems.com to manage the usage. This requires everyone to log into the hotspot everyday and allows precise control of what each user is doing. Perhaps more than you want to take on at this point but is where you will end up if you cannot find satisfactory functionality with the quota feature.
