Re: Please help with QoS
Alrighty forgive my lengthy delay in my reply, here goes
In answer to your questions:
Firstly I have only got 1 IP covered under the Gaming class so far, so I'm a bit unsure what you mean by 2, I have not got that far yet.
192.168.1.103 is the Playstation 3 (I will add my brother's PC gaming ports when I get the PS3 working properly first, his is Wiley-PC .201)
Okay as far as my setup goes I have the following equipment
A Netgear WNDR3700v2 (I bought this for the raving reviews of it's specifications, it's faster etc and I figured if it was going to be used heavily that this was the way to go. This has Gargoyle on it and has both the wireless channels open on it, everyone is connected by wireless, I despise having wires hanging everywhere.
This patches into a Billion 7800N which is set in PPPoE mode (Or pure bridge mode, I think!) *Pic attached
For some strange reason and it's beyond me why, but the DHCP does not work on the Billion, I had to manually put in an IP to connect to it while I was patched directly into it. I can't access it through the Netgear either (I would like to be able to though to check the connect speeds etc without having to do what I just did- Also the wireless on the Billion is off) ---- As for the subnet I think it may be on the same as the Netgear, it's IP is 192.168.1.254, so should I change this to something else? If I do how do I get the Netgear (Gargoyle) to recognize it again? *Pic of DHCP Server attached for Billion
(*Backup Made*)
* Screen shot of ACC attached also
I am changing the Gaming machine settings now, another screen shot will be on the way to confirm that this is 'correct', for both Upload and Download QoS for the Gaming machine PS3 (192.168.1.103)
A closer look at the firmware on the Billion and it's 1 revision old, the only thing in the newer revision that I can see that might make any difference is (Support remote network 0.0.0.0 at GRE (7800GZ)) - Whether that means anything in terms of connecting to it through the Netgear or not is another question. (I seriously cannot be bothered to update this right now unless it's really needed)
Edit**I'm not sure about you but when I load this page the picture's are cut off, you may need to download the billion one in order to see the whole thing*

Re: Please help with QoS
Alright I'm a little confused - I've read your Wiki which mind you is very entertaining and well written but I'm just a numb nuts for things like this. And as I said before I like to complicate things. It states, and I will quote it exactly as it is "So on the QoS download screen we use this IP as the destination address and on the QoS upload screen we use this IP address as the source IP address." ---- And there you go I just had a moment, for some unbeknown reason I don't know why that did not comprehend until I wrote it here, but now I see, but when you look in the default settings that are already there, they are using Destination ??? That's confusing too. (I'm guessing for Ports it's Destination and for IP's it's Source).pbix wrote: On the upload QoS screen you should use source IP and destination ports in this case. Think of how the data flows from the source IP (local computer) to the destination port on the remote computer on the upload side of things.
On the download screen you should reverse and use dest IP and source port. You have this wrong which is why your PS2 is not classifying correctly.
So for my Upload QoS I have changed the Gaming class IP 192.168.1.103 from Destination IP to Source IP (There are no ports yet at this stage, but if there were, are you saying that they should be Destination and not Source?) I'm guessing Yes after the first paragraph.
I'm assuming that by putting the whole IP at this stage that it would cover all the ports for this device regardless as it's just going to do everything that the IP wants to do. (Please correct me if I am wrong, I have a strange suspicion that I have to put Port numbers in 'as well'.)
Alrighty here's the completed screen shot work - Destination and Source's swapped on both Up and Down.
Cheers & Thanks for your help so far,
Brady
** I will test the PS3 in the connection list soon & will double check that it's Up/Down is coming up Gaming Class.

Re: Please help with QoS
Okay!
Looks like the PS3 is working properly now, but I'm wondering if I should open up the minimum bandwidth a bit?
Is the connection list speed in Kilobytes? Cos if it is, it looks like it could use a lot more than the 50 Kilobytes I've given it.
Also sometimes it comes up with NA to start with when I was logging in - I'm guessing it's because it's not actually using any download for the time that connection list was refreshed so it shows NA, right? After that it was sweet.. Screen shots attached

Re: Please help with QoS
Your WAN setup with PPPoE looks perfect. I see no reason to upgrade the firmware on your modem. The WNDR3700v2 is a fine router and will serve you well.
Your router does not need to know your modem's IP address to make the connection to your ISP. This is only needed to access the modem's web page for monitoring. See the WIki http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/dok ... adsl_modem for how to do this. You will have to do the manual setup shown there if your modem does not support DHCP in bridge mode.
For your gaming class you will need to run games on both computers simultaneously to see what the minBW should be. The add some extra so that the class for sure has enough. You will have to figure out the proper ports for your brothers computer to get his gaming traffic into the gaming class. As I said we use steam at my house and I attach my download rules as an example for you.
Since you are getting the hang of QoS perhaps we should move onto your Quotas problem. It seems to me that the best solution here is to create an overquota class with maximum bandwidth of 256kbps. Then setup the quotas as you did before and when the quota is exceeded all traffic for that set of IPs gets routed into the 'overquota' class. Classifications due to quota rules take priority over normal QoS rules.

Alright with your screen shot, for Steam do you apply the same settings on Upload and Download but swap the destination with source to suit?
My brother uses Steam a lot, he will be playing the new much anticipated game Diablo III like crazy when it comes out so I am not sure what that connects through yet will wait until he gets it.
I will catch up on some more tinkering a bit later today, I got a bit of study to catch up on and I will get back to you with some updates soon
Thanks again
Cheers,

Re: Please help with QoS
Alrighty
What happens now? I've made a quota class in up and down called Over-Quota and it's got 1% bandwidth, is 1% going to cut it?
-----
In regards to viewing the bridged modem web page through my Gargoyle setup I believe I have to change the subnet on the modem, I will test this out tomorrow and make sure the Internet still works before working out how to make changes to Gargoyle files (will have to learn how to log into it and make changes to the files etc).
Kind Regards,
Brady

Re: Please help with QoS
For your over quota class 1% is not going to cut it. You will have to do as I stated and change the maximum BW from unlimited to 256kB. Why is covered in excruciating detail in the Wiki. The percents do nothing unless the link is saturated. Once your over quota you must limit BW at all times or you will not accomplish your goal.
Also, I recommend you set your quotas up on a weekly basis. It will just be better for everyone to know sooner rather than later that they need to control themselves. Just take your monthly allotment and multiply by 7 and divide by 31. This is the weekly budget plan and will be easier to manage.
I think all steam games use the ports I showed you. Also you want to throw his steam downloads into the slow class. In my setup I showed a "Steam DL" class for this but you can just use your "Slow" class.
BTW, my "gaming" class minBW is set to 350kbps. Your 50kbps will not be enough for stream games.
Yes you must also do upload rules to match reversing IP and port.

Thanks again - I've been a little tight on time and have not been able to spend as much time as I would have liked confukling with the router.
It seems like an awful lot of work to configure all those Quota's. I am not sure how to set it up to do 1 per week or do I have to actually go in and do something every week? Cos I'd rather not have to do this, I want it to be a set and forget event, if you go over your quota tough shit your slow until the next billing cycle is how I see it, since I will probably never ever hit 250GB for the month, my brother is more likely to do this and I've showed him to log onto the Router's web page it will show him in % how much he has used for the month, so it's up to him to control himself otherwise he is throttled.
Alright I've changed the Over-Quota class to Max BW at 256KB/Sec - I have not changed the % as I was not sure if I should or not.
I will have a fiddle with the Steam setup tomorrow and setup the 'Download' for it on a slow setup.
I also like to use NZB newsleecher which uses a secure port of 563 (I think from memory) I am also looking at putting this into a 'slow' mode.
There is so much to do !
Awaiting further instructions from the master man
Kind Regards,
Brady

Re: Please help with QoS
Vb now you have that sorted, any reason why you have the billion as your gateway. I had a billion but sold it on eBay and changed to a netgear 834g set as a modem with the 3700 v2 as the router, Was part of my cost justification to convert it at the time

Netgear wndr3700 v2 Gargoyle 1.8.0
TP-Link Archer C7 v2 1.10.X (Built 20180122-0707)

Hi Tals, tals wrote:Vb now you have that sorted, any reason why you have the billion as your gateway. I had a billion but sold it on eBay and changed to a netgear 834g set as a modem with the 3700 v2 as the router, Was part of my cost justification to convert it at the time
Not entirely sure I have everything sorted, I have the class setup for the Over-quote but no idea how to make everything 'fall into it' when the quota's are reached. I still have to change the subnet on the Billion and somehow change the IP in the Gargoyle to let it 'see it'. I am all talk at this stage as I have not had a lot of spare time to do anything, but when I do I will conquer it all at once if time permits. ---- I may need to read the master's wiki a bit and see what I can find out about the over-quota's.
I am starting to question the Billion myself, I have moved all my gear into a cupboard to make it more aesthetically pleasing for my wife near the telephone socket. What I have noticed is how damn warm it is inside this cupboard and all the heat is coming from the Billion and not the Netgear, although still warm but nowhere near as warm as the Billion, the Billion is almost like hot, which to me is using more electricity than I need it to if all it's being used for is a modem.
I originally bought the Billion on good reviews from an Australian wholesaler umart.com.au - It is a great modem and it's served it's purpose well, but now that I have the Gargoyle going it may not be needed for it's other features.
What I would honestly like is an all in one device that has Gargoyle on it, is this even an option?
Otherwise I may do the same thing as you and sell out the Gargoyle for another Netgear alternative or an already dumbed down modem.
Thanks for leaving a message
Kind Regards,
Brady
**EDIT: I just had a look at the Netgear 834g and it looks like my old WGR614v6 ! That thing was rock solid for it's day and I've still got it in a cupboard somewhere he he
