2 wireless routers/networks 1 dsl modem

Post by dksm39 »

Hi
I'm a novice user. I recently installed Gargoyle on WRT54GS V1.0.
I have an existing Netgear WNDR3700 router connected to my dsl modem as my main router.
I would like to add the Gargoyle WRT54GS onto the network as a 2nd wireless network which I can toggle/limit bandwidth on the whole router for ever user who connects so it doesn't dramatically effect the bandwidth on the main Netgear router. I'm having a problem with guests/renters using high bandwidth (torrents/streaming/uploading etc) constantly (despite my best efforts to ask to toggle bandwidth).

Could someone please let me know how to connect both wireless routers to 1 dsl modem as 2 seperate wireless networks. ( If possible please explain the basic steps to me as I'm a novice user).

Thanks for your help!

Your WNDR3700 is a much better platform for Gargoyle than the WRT54G. Do you have Gargoyle on that router and do you have your modem in bridge mode? At the minimum you should have that.

I suggest that you can use the WNDR3700 running QoS to solve your problems without resorting to a second router.

First assign static IP addresses to all your own devices using their MAC address such that they get IP addresses say in the range of 128-254. The setup your DHCP server so that all other devices get addresses below 126.

Now enable upload and download QoS and configure for your available bandwidth. Make a class for all your renters giving then the service level you desire. For example when the link is fully loaded you may want them to have no more than 10% of the available bandwidth.

Make a rule using source/dest IP address in CIDR notation 192.168.1.0/25. This will cause all addresses below 126 to match and you can then route that traffic to the class you created for them.

Enable the active congestion controller

See http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/doku.php?id=qos for more details on using QoS.

That's a great idea, Thanks!

Maybe what I'll do is practice and try setting this up on the WRT54GS for an interim router so I have time setting Gargoyle up on the WNDR3700 without any internet down time.

Just a quick question, do you know off hand if I can install Gargoyle directly through the WNDR3700 web configuration? If not don't worry, I'll search around anyways.

Thanks again.

It always a good idea to practice first. You can setup everything and run it from your WRT54GS if it is v1.1 or v2. These routers have sufficient RAM and FLASH but the CPU is a bit pokey so probably they cannot exceed about 10Mbps download speed. Anyway you can set it all up and just replace your WNDR3700. That way you will always have one working router at hand should something happen.

Your WNDR3700 must be a version 1 or 2 to work. See http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3700 for instructions on locating the version number and loading the software. Just replace the openwrt file with Gargoyle files of the same name.

Thanks for the heads up! Good advice!

I have a quick question, which I'm not sure if you can help.
I set gargoyle up a few weeks ago on the WRT54GS V1 and misplaced the paper I wrote down the wifi password and new ip address i set the router to. Soooo, basically I cant get to the web configuration page or login by WiFi. Brilliant, I know.

Any idea on how to 'reset' the router back to basic defaults? I tried the reset button on back as well as 30/30/30 which didn't do anything.

Thanks

Yeah there is no 30/30/30 reset with openwrt based routers. Try failsafe mode. If there isn't a button on the front, try the reset button on the back:

Ok, I gave up on the WRT54GS, however I was lucky enough to find a used Dlink DIR-825 and got it for relatively cheap. This was much easier to install gargoyle on and runs much faster/smoother vs. wrt54gs. Also it's similar to my Netgear WNDR3700 so a good spare router to practice setting up gargoyle on.

I have to say Gargoyle and your approach to setting up renter's rules is AMAZING and fits exactly what I need!

I've set up static IPs for my computers outside the DHCP ranges (which will be used for renters/guests) as you recommended.

I've have some questions regarding QOS rules I've set up for guest/renters, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
(I don't know too much about the technical aspects of the rules, so I mainly set them up by trial/error and based on the default rules).

For Renters/Guests
Download
1. Source Port: 80, Destination: 192.168.1.100/25
2. Source Port: 443, Destination: 192.168.1.100/25
3. Source Port: 53, Destination: 192.168.1.100/25
4. Destination: 192.168.1.100/25, Transport Protocol: TCP renters
5. Destination: 192.168.1.100/25, Transport Protocol: UDP renters
Renters Class BW 10%, Max BW 800 kbps (temp values, still playing with)
Upload
1. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Destination Port: 80
2. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Destination Port: 443
3. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Destination Port: 53
4. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Transport Protocol: TCP
5. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Transport Protocol: UDP
Renters Class BW 10%, Max BW 20 kbps (temp values, still playing with)

I added the TCP/UDP rules because I noticed the renters/guests were using Torrents which under connection lists for their IPs showed as 'NA' classes and it seemed like they were by default using 'Fast' Classes when I checked under the QOS class rules (they 'load' values were increased when 'renters' were using torrents). It seemed to help, but it may only be coincidence.

Is there anything else I can do do limit Torrents?

Voip Rules
Download
1. Destination: 192.168.1.131
Voip Class: Total BW 20%, Min 80kbps, Max 200kbps, Min RTT Yes
Upload
1. Source: 192.168.1.131
Voip Class: Total BW 20%, Min BW 20 kbps, Max no limit

Are these rules sufficient for Voip?

Everyone else rules
Download
1. Source Port: 80, Connection bytes: 1024 kBytes **Normal class
2. Source Port: 443, Connection bytes: 1024 kBytes **Normal class
3. Source Port: 80, Destination: 192.168.1.129/20 **Fast class
4. Source Port: 443, Destination: 192.168.1.129/20 **Fast class
5. Source Port: 53, Destination: 192.168.1.129/20 **Fast class
Default Normal/Fast Classes as per Gargoyle Install
Upload
1. Destination Port: 80, Connection bytes: 1024 kBytes **Normal class
2. Destination Port: 443, Connection bytes: 1024 kBytes **Normal class
3. Source: 192.168.1.129/20, Destination Port: 80 **Fast class
4. Source: 192.168.1.129/20, Destination Port: 443 **Fast class
5. Source: 192.168.1.129/20, Destination Port: 53 **Fast class
Default Normal/Fast Classes as per Gargoyle Install

The one problem I do notice is that I am on (and no on else), on 'Connection Lists' I get udp/tcp connections that fall under the 'renters' class and I'm not sure why or how to solve this.
Example
udp
75.153.176.1:53
Gargoyle:13243
0.068 KBytes renters
0.125 KBytes renters

Gargoyle is great! Thanks for your help!

Looks like you are well on the way to obtaining your goal.

5. Source: 192.168.1.100/25, Transport Protocol: UDP
Renters Class BW 10%, Max BW 20 kbps (temp values, still playing with)
This could be simplified as
Download
1. Destination: 192.168.1.100/25
Renters Class BW 10%
Upload
1. Source: 192.168.1.100/25
Renters Class BW 10%

This simple setup will catch all traffic to/from these renter IPs and throw it into the renter's class. This single rule represents the 'default' for renters. If some need develops for more renter rules make sure they appear above this rule in the list.

I removed the max bandwidth limitation on your renters class. I am guessing you do not care how much they get unless you are trying to use the system. Just using the percent BW limitation should scale them back dramatically whenever you start using the system but you can do as you like.

Your upload Min BW should match the download Min BW since voice takes the same in each direction. You do not need to specify a MaxBW for this and should change this to unlimited to avoid problems. The amount of MinBW you need can vary a little based on the technology you are using so watch the class while making some calls to make sure you have the right setting, but you should be close.

All renter torrents are already limited to 800kbps per the setup above. What exactly do you want to do beyond that?

What is your default class set to? Looks like maybe you have it set to the renters class. Set it to what you want your default to be.

Nice application of Gargoyle QoS.
