New to topic FLASHING

Post by flim »

Hello boys,

I m totally fresh greenhorn here, and would like to ask few questions before try to flash Gargoyle to my recenty bought WDNR_3700_v2.

I am using original netgear firmware with latest update.

For Netgear...I think this is the file which should be used for me to flash directly from Netgear webinterface:

http://www.gargoyle-router.com/download ... actory.img

Regarding flashing... is there some how to? What does it mean unplug router? From LAN or from POWER? Do i need after flashing from original Netgear interface turn off, restart or press some reset button? Or some 30/30/30 method?

Questions: Is it possible with the 1.3.5 Gargoyle

1) Choose DYN DNS provider ( i am using no-ip.org ). From pictures in here i am not sure.
2) Does it support internet sharing of attached FAT32 - 1TB HDD?
3) What about throughput on USB HDD? Upload/download speed while on LAN/wifi?
3) Can i manage folders, usernames and passwords for sharing on internet ? Example: folder SHARE for user MILO, folder SHARE1 for user JOHN, different rights?

I just need to secure my access to the attached USB disc while connecting from elswhere.....is it possible, or not?

I hope you mean v1.5.3. Your router is not supported in Gargoyle v1.3 so please use v1.5 firmware.

You must select from a drop down list but I can confirm that no-ip.org is available in the list.

Others with more experience with the USB mounting will have to answer your other questions.

I myself do not have your router but I know it is highly regarded by our community here so you should be very satisfied with your result. The file you referenced is the correct file. If you pick the wrong file it generally will not work. There is no good step by step guide on how to flash because each router is a little different. It would take a user who has the router and wrote down exactly what he did. I would just give it a go and don't worry, if you have trouble come back and tell us what you did and what problem you have and you will get help.

See that for transfer rate testing for #3

FAT-32 for a 1TB drive is pretty inefficient.

Also remember the router is running a mini linux version, so its
MUCH better on performance for a drive that is formatted
as ext3/ext4 and also easier to configure sharing that way.

#2 and #4 - I do not think it is possible - you can share over your
local LAN, but I do not believe you can share over the WAN.

I've never even tried this or considered trying it, but you might
have more luck searching or asking in the OpenWRT forums as
this will probably require quite a few firewall rules to be
configured, which will have to be done via command line / putty.

Ah guys, perfect thank for interest.

Regarding USB .... some issues have been reported since new 1.5.4 is available. It makes me bit worry now. As not linux advanced user i am not sure if i would be able fix it via telnet .

@DoesItMatter ... FAT 32 is only available file system on this concrete USB disc. ICE BOX 901. You are not the first nor last who wonder.
... Internet access/sharing with DYN DNS works perfect almost with the original soft, so it is only question of firewall settings. I was interested more on administration of these setting. If it can share locally, it must be available share from outside. But in original FW is only admin password - one and the only protection. And i think to use admin rights on router the same as for sharing as unwise. Therefore i am thinking about flashing.

@pbx ... thanx for No-Ip good news !

One more technical question..Is it possible to run ssh directly on router? For secured connection to my attached USB drive.

So please if is still in HERE someone who uses USB attached disc on this router (WDNR_3700v2) please send me some info. Or print-screen from web-interface on the site where are USB-attached disc properties.

So i will put here few points as suggestion how to flash. If something is wrong please let me know.:

1) disconnect from modem and set via original webiterface on default setting. Cable connected ! No WiFi!
2) Use latest ..... factory.img, and flash via original Netgear webinterface.
3) Let the router time .... 5 mins.
4) Pull out from electricity plug ( so no power on it )
5) wait 30 secs
6) Plug again ... wait till it comes to life
7) Start webbrowser, and put in 192.168.1.1
8) login: root, pass: password
9) start to set up your new flashed Gargoyle Netgear router.
10) nothing have to be done by telnet

Is it OK, or do i have to change /add something. Pushing RESET button or similar things. To get my router on internet, i need to register his MAC address, hope if i am still using its own, after flashing will not change.

best regards flim
