Time-restricted user still connecting

Post by jevvv »

Hi all, I'm not sure what I've done wrong:

I have students boarding with us and they tend to hog the data so got a TPLink TL-WR1043ND router and have Gargoyle on it. The data quotas are working and I love that the kids can't complain when THEY've used all their own data allowance.

My current concern is that I have set time restrictions for the two students - there have been incidents of them sleeping in class if I don't cut their internet off late in the evening. Originally I had to use a timer on the power for the router, before getting the TPLink.

The problem with the time restrictions is that they are supposed to block internet access at 10:15pm (ie 22:15) but I still see one of them connected at 10:30 or 10:35pm.

Any idea why?Image

that was supposed to show a screen cap of what the restrictions look like. I use one for before midnight and one for after.

When I look at the System tab and the Time section it is showing what the time currently is here, so I don't think it is because of an error in what time the router is functioning in

Please post a screen shot of your restrictions page and also a screen shot of your connection list page when the problem is occurring. I am hopeful that with this information someone can help you.

What time is it showing on your router under system time.

Also have you forced the ip in connection->dhcp and tick block mac addresses that use a different ip?

You will still see them connected as it doesn't block connection to the network just the internet. You can test this yourself by blocking yourself and then accessing the router

The router shows the same time as the system time on my computer.

So the connected people are those connected to the network, not those connected through the network TO the internet?

The place I've been looking to see if anyone is accessing is Status > Bandwidth Usage, or for current Status > Bandwidth Distribution. Isn't that what these two tabs are for?

I just now checked Status > Web Usage and it confirms to me that someone is online when they are supposed to be blocked. The fact that it shows their username that I allocated through Connection > DHCP (yes I have blocked mac addresses using different IP) AFTER the time block would seem that the block isn't working :(

I will try and reproduce this myself this weekend but you might try adding yourself to the blocked list and see what happens when you try and access.

Also, if you look in the connection list you can see if there are active connections downloading data to that IP. If you see data going there it would be confirmation that the block is not working.

I looked at this for an hour this weekend and unfortunately I could not reproduce your result. Perhaps this issue arises do to some combination of options you are using and without knowing what those might be its is difficult to make progress.

If you could log onto your router and post the results of the command.

Code: Select all

iptables -vnL -t filter
This will at least tell us what restrictions are in force and if they are trapping any traffic at all.

If you go into status->hosts with active connections at that time does it show the pc and also the correct IP assigned to it.

Now I happened to wander up to my son's room yesterday when he should have been blocked and he rather gleefully advised me that if he was streaming a movie then as long as he didn't come out of the movie he could continue to go through a restriction period. I didn't test this further but I am wondering if a session in place continues under certain conditions.

OK I did some tests here, in respect of my son I think that must have been down to caching. I saw mumble disconnect immediately - likewise the web pages, iplayer kept going for a while and then also stopped.

So I think the first stage is just making sure in the connected list the machine is identifying itself correctly.
