WRT54GL which file?

Post by dirtmover »

I wish to install over Tomato on my WRT54GL. Which file to use? The instructions say "These routers have a broadcom wireless chip, so you will want to use the brcm-2.4 images".

Do I have to stick with older release 1.2.x to get the brcm-2.4 image or can I use gargoyle_1.4.x-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx?

You can use any version you like. I have loaded them all on my GL and they work. However, the GL is rather slow and limited in memory so patience is required as well as lowered expectations as to how many different things you can do at once.
Linksys WRT1900ACv2
Netgear WNDR3700v2
TP Link 1043ND v3
TP-Link TL-WDR3600 v1

Question
When you say patience is required.
How long
it's been 3 hours since it first started to upload

I don't think the first time was this long.
I already have an older version if the firmware
I just wanted to update
But i'm using the bin file since that's the only thing available from the download for the gl
The trx isn't for the gl.
Should I interrupt it and reboot the router?
It's been hours

Because of the limited RAM on the GL the web interface does not work so smoothly during the upgrade and sometimes you do not get a good sequence of messages to make you feel warm and fuzzy. But if the upgrade works then the router will reboot itself so you should just try to navigate to 192.168.1.1. If you have to put in the default password your upgrade was successful. If you old password still works then it was not.

I have found the best result with the GL by restoring the default settings and then disabling the WAN interface entirely from the web page. The reboot the router and you should then have enough RAM free to upgrade through the web interface.

You may use the .trx file on any of the listed broadcom routers. The bin file is only needed for replacing the original firmware or if you use the bootloader to update your firmware.

hum...well eventually i couldn't go on the internet anymore even though I was connected through ethernet.
so I powered down and up my router...
it was set to default password so I assumed it worked.

I tried to update to the 1.4.6 version because it's suppose to be stable...
but i'm still having issues with the wireless
before i updated the firmware, i had to reboot the router almost everyday this past month because wireless would just stop working
it wasn't that bad when i first installed gargoyle... :(

any recommendation for which version might help this problem a bit more?
I read through the forum and it seems like an openwrt problem...i was just hoping one of these version will experience it less
I've already had to restart the router once since I upgraded the firmware
