I have, and I suspect a lot of people have this router free from Comcast running an old version of OpenWRT. It looks like there has been some discussion at DD-WRT and OpenWRT forums about putting Backfire on this router, but it seems to have come to a stop because the image currently running on the router was compiled on some arcane version of Linux.
It was also pointed out in one of these threads that this router has essentially the same hw as a DIR 600 A1, which already has a Gargoyle build in .bin format. This router takes .img format through the Netgear web interface, but since I got it for free and have another router running OpenWRT I am happy to sacrifice this one to see if it can run Gargoyle/OpenWRT, I just don't know how to upgrade the firmware. I do have telnet access, so any ideas are appreciated.
I bet a lot of people would be happy to get the old Netgear firmware off, and replace it with something much more functional as I have done with my Buffalo router.

Re: Netgear WNR 1000 V2
rule of thumb is firmware needs to be supported by openwrt first
form my understanding you would need to mod the firmware with hex-edit?
