Should I be able to get to my modem?

Should I be able to get to my modem?
Hi
I have my gargoyle router set to 192.168.1.1, my modem is set to 192.168.1.2
When they are connected together I can't get to the modem ie if I want to check if the connection has dropped or (the real reason) I want to setup router stats. If I take the gargoyle router out of the equation I can get to it etc, any ideas if it is possible to access the modem with them connected and why I can't?
Many thanks

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
I suspect different gateway's are being assigned.
When you plug directly into the Modem - does it assign a
gateway of 192.168.1.2 ?
If so, that's your issue when you are plugged into the
Gargoyle router, it defaults to gateway 192.168.1.1
If you need to get to the modem temporarily, next time,
go into your TCP/IP config and blank out the gateway, then see
if you can access the modem through the router.
You might have to Static IP your machine to do this.

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
I suspect both routers are on the same subnet
If this is the case change one of the routers for example
192.168.10.1
and leave the other router
192.168.1.1

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
OK i'm probably still not understanding this, my setup is a modem (it is a dg834 but it's in modem mode so it connects without any other input). The router is set to ppoe connection.
If I plug my oc directly to the modem I can access it using 192.168.1.2 (or I changed it to 192.168.10.1 or what it is now 192.168.1.254) - I don't do anything else just move the cat5 cable from the router to the modem and I gain access. However with it through the router I can't see it.
Is the problem the router has no way of understanding the modem - i.e its beyond the network, or am I just off base on that?
When I tried a different subnet I changed the netmask to 255.255.0.0 is that correct as well?
Appretiate your thoughts, helps me understand the networking better - thank you

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
Looks like you might be doing a double NAT
Just leave your dg834 as is
192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
Just change gargoyle to
192.168.10.1
255.255.255.0
Might want to reboot bot routers just in case...........
I suspect it will just work?

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
my guess is your router IP address is 192.168.1.1 but it gives your PC an address of 192.168.1.2?If I plug my oc directly to the modem I can access it using 192.168.1.2 (or I changed it to 192.168.10.1 or what it is now 192.168.1.254) - I don't do anything else just move the cat5 cable from the router to the modem and I gain access. Code: Select all
internet -- xDSL router 192.168.1.1(NAT 1) --Gargoyle 192.168.10.1 (NAT 2) -- PC

For basic use always use 255.255.255.0
Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?

No machines on the network are set to 192.168.1.2, all my network I use static ip (with some minor exceptions).
I changed the modem (please note though it is a router - for this it really is a modem

Then from PC I tried to get to 192.168.10.1, nothing, I then changed my pc to 192.168.10.2 - still no good. I then moved my pc to connect to the back of the modem and that worked. But that is no good as the pc needs to access the modem at all times for this monitoring exercise

Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
why?static ip
Why don't you use DHCP, makes things much easier
Re: Should I be able to get to my modem?
Im assuming you have set your gargoyle router to 192.168.10.1 then pluged your PC into the LAN port? But you PC has a fixed IP address of ? 192.168.1.x ?Then from PC I tried to get to 192.168.10.1, nothing,
