That is the first pinout I've seen that way. I went with the pinout here:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/buffalo/wzr ... ial.pinout

which was the same as the one here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=434920

I also just verified that I am seeing 3.3vdc between pins 1 and 2 so it appears that I am, indeed, using the correct pinouts.

Thanks!

How do you connect it to your computer?

Hmm, not familiar with Minicom myself

I usually use Putty thru Windows to connect via a
USB to Serial adapter

115200,n,8,1 is the most common parameters followed by 57600,n,8,1.
No handshake/flow control
(no hardware flow control, no software XON/XOFF flow control)

Should be your settings.

When I used Putty - I had to set those above parameters in 2 places

1) in the putty program settings itself
2) in the hardware port config options in device manager

In Linux - do you have to set it both in the hardware and
the software portion as well?

Every instruction I have seen only mentions setting up the USB/Serial in minicom, never in any other setting.

To connect the computer to the router I am using something like this: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-to-rs2 ... reen-24512

It shows up in dmesg like this:

Code: Select all

[80023.544062] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device number 11 using ohci_hcd
[80023.760296] pl2303 4-2:1.0: pl2303 converter detected
[80023.793258] usb 4-2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
In lsusb it is:

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 012: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port
I'm starting to get worried that this thing in borked. But the way it sends data looks like the router is working, its just not getting transferred correctly. Maybe my USB/Serial cable is borked? I might have an old router with a serial port on it that I might be able to look at.

Thanks for the help so far.

That could be the reason for the garbage. It looks like the adapter does not support TTL/3.3V.

Here is the exact adapter I have: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-2-0-to ... cable-8757

I don't seem to have a female-female cable or adapter for DB9 so I haven't been able to test the adapter as yet. I'll see what I can locate.

Thanks!

This one should work

The other one is USB to RS-232 which means its a standard serial port

Keep in mind - DO NOT mess with that 5v signal at all, you can fry parts
of your router and possibly your USB port if using wrong voltage levels.

You should only have to use the GND / RX / TX points of contact.

OK, so my USB adapter showed up today. I just plugged it in and booted the router. Here's what I saw. I'm going to go through it and try and follow the other links I have to upload a firmware. If you have any pointers, feel free to let me know! :)
