WZR-HP-G300NH-R Fail

OK, I've tried all of the different firmwares, and the two MAC options I've located. Nothing ever even tries to transfer.

You should not try to flash gargoyle on it, if it is the new hardware version that is not supported.
Try to see if you can go back to the DD-WRT firmware, for a starter.
Then we can try to check if you have a supported hardware version or not afterwards.

Everything ends up the same . . . timeout.

Some of the sites mentioned flashing RED leds. I have a SOLID red light, green power and the blue Movie light. That's it.

Read the whole page - also save it, good info there.

You WILL have to recover via serial recovery.

TFTP will not work if you were flashing between 2 different
types of firmware (DD-WRT and OpenWRT)

That page has all the info you need and the router is recoverable.
It's just stuck @ the uboot environment and wont continue past that.

I have had to serial recover my WZR-HP-G300NH around 3-5 times
flashing different DD-WRT / Buffalo / Gargoyle / OpenWRT images
It happens, it will probably happen again, so get a serial cable

Not hard to do, and its good practice for future routers as well.

I have a USB/Serial cable (two actually). I'm looking for my torx/secure torx to open the unit up, and searching the thread for instructions for getting the unit working.

You should use a "normal" dd-wrt upgrade file.

The wzrhpg300nh-pro-v24sp2-14998 is the Buffalo default DD-WRT image.

I've gotten the serial port wired in, connected it to the USB/serial convertor and booted the router. All I'm getting in minicom is garbage.

I'm using 115200 8N1.

Now, I should confirm which lines go where:
On the router, the pins are round, round, round, square. If they are numbered 4, 3, 2, 1 (as square is usually pin 1), then the pin IDs should be:
1. 3.3V
2. GND
3. TX
4. RX

I have soldered pins into 2, 3, 4 and used a 4-pin (30wire) sound card connector to connect to a D-sub9 female. Wired as follows:
router #2 - DS9 #5
router #3 - DS9 #3
router #4 - DS9 #2
Everything else on the DS9 is open. I noticed that when I connect the power to the router, I get a brief flash of "Cannot connect to modem /dev/ttyUSB0 but it goes away quickly and the garbage streams onto the page.

Also, the bottom status line in minicom, after pressing CTRL-A is:

looks like the different hardware revisions also have different pinouts... another example: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 878#427878
It at least looks like the one you have used is not correct (the one from the openwrt wiki). And yes, you are right. The square is pin 1.
