I found out what it was. A Chrome extension called FreeHDSport installed by one of my kids I guess. I have deleted it and the pop ups have gone away.
It wasn't doing it on any other websites just the router management utility page.

Pop up ads in Gargoyle Router Management Utility
Is any one else getting pop up ads in the Gargoyle Router Management Utility when using Chrome and Firefox but not Safari? (I'm on Mac OS X 10.8.2) I get Dr Oz diet, win an iPhone... What gives? Screenshots taken when mousing over hyperlinks that appear in chrome but not in Safari... Not sure where ...

Because I followed the Gargoyle instructions on the installation page for the router to the letter.

I bought a WR1043ND v 1.8 and put my Netgear DG834G into modem only mode, flashed the Firmware with the gargoyle_1.3.14-ar71xx-tl-wr1043nd-v1-squashfs-factory.bin image and that worked a charm.
