Gargoyle on x86 with Speedify

Post by spudstrawb »

I'm after some guidance and opinions. Our internet performance is a bit ordinary, so along with the ADSL I have a couple of wireless broadband USB modems. I use Speedify installed on a couple of computers to do channel bonding between the adsl and one of the usb modems to improve the bandwidth.

I did have one of the USB modems hooked into a draytek router to do load sharing but it hasn't always been successful. I have also been running Gargoyle on a Netgear WNDR3700 router to sort out quotas, so that the kids don't chew up too much internet. The Gargoyle router sits downstream of the Draytek.

I've been thinking of changing things around and creating a dedicated Speedify server that would combine the adsl and both USB modems. This would sit between the Draytek and Gargoyle routers. Then I got wondering about running Gargoyle on the Speedify server as well (in VirtualBox). This could allow the Netgear to be removed altogether.

So what I would appreciate is anyone pointing out the pros and cons of running Gargoyle on the Speedify server (when I say Speedify server, I mean a small low power PC of my own to distribute the internet within my home network, not one of the commercial servers run by Speedify) versus leaving the Netgear router in place to sort out the quotas.
